A British young nobleman. The son of Earl Alexial and his blooded sister. Inherited his father's "Earl" title after his mysterious disappearance. Cain's eyes colour is between sparkling green and golden as a result of incest. (it seems that Cain dislikes people noticing his unique eye colour - especially when he was a child). His father named him Cain as he hates his own son so much that he believes Cain is evil and cursed. To lessen his sorrows, Cain starts collecting poisons which earned him the name of "Poison Earl Cain" - the poison buff. His rich knowledge on poisons helps him tackle lots of mysterious cases around him.
Cain C. Hargreaves is the son of a wealthy count. Hes good looking, rich, and has pretty much everything a guy could want, but theres actually many secrets surrounding him. Supposedly theres a family curse on him, he collection poisons, and well, he gets involved in a lot of odd mysteries. This story is set in 19th Century England.
Mystery surrounds the young Count Cain C. Hargreaves, a known procurator of poisons famous in his home of Victorian England, it is said he brings a curse on all those around him. Bloody intrigue follows where ever he goes, the whip marks on his back burning with each sinful act by the secret society his supposedly dead father has gathered. Cain strikes back this time, acting against the destiny engraved onto his gold eyes, evidence of his father and mother's incestuous ways.
The notorious "Earl of Poison" who sweeps through upper London society with grace and death. At only age 17, he has countless women at his feet, and many more fearing his very name.
Cain has an extensive collection of poison which he found in the basement of the Hargreaves Castle, a collection left by his ancestors since his family is known for killing using poison.
Cain appears to be a very cold and calculating person whose footsteps are covered with corpses but he also has a very caring side which is shown only to those he love, ie. Merryweather, his half sister and Riff, his butler.
Cain is named as such because "Cain was the first person who killed his relative." His fathered, Alexis, blamed the birth of Cain for the insanity (and eventual death) of his sister, Augusta (Cain's mother and aunt), as well as the Hargreaves family forcing him to marry someone he didn't love.

Cain is the main character of the series. He is son of Alexis and now is the owner of the Hargreaves house. Very smart and attractive, Cain lives to solve lots of misterious crimes that happens arround him. He likes to travel alone and collects poison. The young earl always have a sample of poison with him, it saved his life by deceiving the enemies. Cain is also called the "Earl of Poison".
The young head of the Hargreaves estate and a well-known eccentric, Cain became the current Earl after his father's untimely death when Cain was around 12 y.o. (In fact, his father, Alexis, leapt to his apparent death off a cliff at their large house in Cornwall after smoking a pipe filled by his own son with poison.) During the current story he resides in London, somewhere near Mayfair, and indulges in an odd hobby of collecting and studying various poisons. His childhood was very dark and filled with perverse mental and physical torment largely caused by the constant brutalities of his father which included mildly poisoning the sugar cubes that his son placed in his tea as well as leaving bloody whip marks on his back semi-daily which resulted in permanent scars later on. He spent a good deal of his days as a child in a state of tearful, abject loneliness as he was forbidden to go out. This in turn has lead to a somewhat morbid fascination with crimes, murders, and little details. His odd existence which he views as cursed places him time and time again at the center of various tragedies and the scenes of twisted crimes almost all of which are related to his father's secret, ominous, supernatural organization, 'Delilah'. Rumors abound that the young, exquisitely beautiful lord is like an angel of death in that terrible things always occur around him. Besides his palor and jet-black hair he has eyes of the rarest shade of green that sparkle with bits of gold. (Cain is a child resulting from a union between his demented father and his Aunt Augusta who went mad shortly after he was born and who later committed suicide by jumping out of a window.) His sanity is somewhat kept intact by his persistently cheerful, younger half-sister Mary and his astonishingly faithful, young steward/butler, Riff, who he seems to be reliant on for mental and emotional support. He spent many a day crying by himself until Riff arrived and , as Cain stated, rendered him no longer capable of shedding tears. Aside from clinging to Riff possessively and smiling occasionally while in the prescence of he and Mary, Cain appears largely cool and ambivalent on the exterior and keeps to his little family circle even going so far as to spurn and ignore the invitations of High Society circles whenever he sees fit adding to his reputation of being contrary. He's a basically kind-hearted but very cautious, guarded person who knows how to put up an appearance or act a part around others if need be. And sadly for him, he has a habit of falling in love with people who are doomed to die or who have quirky flaws.

The statuesque, fair, handsome, young steward of the Hargreaves estate and formerly a medical student from a middle class family before a tragic fire that claimed the lives of his two parents and his younger brother Clyde under vague circumstances. He attempted to committ suicide after their deaths and was placed in a fairly pleasant place for the mentally unstable until he was collected and gainfully employed by Alexis as Cain's personal servant. After the incident with his father, Riff remained by Cain's side and became the head servant and the chief organizer of all of Cain's affairs. Riff is somewhat like Cain's guardian angel. He rescued Cain from the dark spell of his father's madness and swore to stay by him for the rest of his life stating that he lives only to protect him. In addition, he is unfailingly graceful in his address and would perhaps be a little too intelligent and refined to have in a sense lowered himself to his current position if it weren't for his willingness to serve and his single-mindedly, self-sacrificing attitude toward his most precious lord. Whatever his mental flaws are that allow him to be both unassuming and self-effacing while also keenly efficient, unwaveringly precise, and always in the right place at the right time to an uncanny extent he seems outwardly calm and poised most of the time. Riff does more for Cain than perhaps is necessary for someone who is recognized by society as an adult and heir to a large name and fortune. Besides managing his financial matters, running the estate and its staff and investigating odd circumstances related to the many mysteries that they encounter, Riff dresses Cain from head to toe and ties his shoelaces for him like one might dress a child who is not yet proficient or perhaps a beautiful doll. He also allows Cain to cling to him for comfort and emotional solace like one who is under the spell of another though it is still a matter of debate as to which one is actually master of the situation. Out of all of the others, Riff is the only one who Cain has confided everything to including the circumstances of his birth and the scars on his back which noone else may see or touch. He has a noble and gentle soul and cares deeply for him and despite many arguments back and forth it is (in my slightly skewered opinion) rather apparent that Riff is in love with Cain and vic versa.

The statuesque, fair, handsome, young former (?) steward of the Hargreaves estate and also formerly a medical student from a middle class family before a tragic fire that claimed the lives of his two parents and his younger brother Clyde under vague circumstances. Shortly after the incident when he realized what had occured the lighter part of his personality prompted him to attempt to committ suicide after their deaths/murders. He was hospitalized and visited by Alexis who tampered with his memories and tapped into his lighter persona for his own twisted ends. It is still unclear as to what is truth and what is fiction except that we are led to believe that Riff was used as a tool for Alexis' plans to destroy his son Cain and drag him into madness by making him grow to love him only to snatch Riff away at the precise moment when it would cause the most damage. This person appears to be as cruel and sinister and cold as 'Riff' was gentle, unassuming, self-lessly devoted and warm with a few twisted signs of affection toward his former lord bleeding through on occasion. By his own admission, the person known as 'Rifael Rafitt' was harboring two 'faces' from childhood to hide the absolute cruelty and darkness within his soul. Alexis noticing this intriguing duality triggered the selfless and guilt-ridden half of his personality with the help of 'Justice' to make him the devoted companion and angelic salvation for the mentally fragile young Cain while pushing a respite on Riff from his darker internal wanderings. Riff seemed to take to this odd 'suggestion' with suspiciously amazing ease infusing every bit of his soul into becomng the lighter reflection of himself (see Riff on the 'Light' character page) making one think that he fled willingly from Alexis' projected darkness and sought comfort in caring for someone else in order to avoid the consciousness of his own sin. Indeed, 'Dark' Riff is as much a puppet of Alexis' whims and world plans as are 'Riff' and Cain. It has also been stated that Rifel is the only 'card' under Alexis' 'direct control' earning him the title of 'assassin doll' by Jezebel who appears to loathe him for stealing away his father seeing him as nothing more than an evil drone who lives to merely do the 'Cardmaster's' bidding without question or emotion though this may be subject to change in the very near future.

When she first met Cain, she didin't like him, but soon they start to understand each other. Cain adopted Merry and took her to live at the Hargreaves house.

Name origin: What Yuki-sensei was about I can not be wholly sure of except that the Doctor's name is an odd(!) melding of the female, biblical figure Jezebel and Former British Prime Minister (Benjamin) Disraeli.
The fiendishly warped stepchild of Alexis and a card member of 'Delilah'-'Death' in the 'Major Arcana' of the Tarot. He seems almost fragile at times,sad and wayward while at others he is frigteningly and decadently viscious. To say that he is complicated and contradictory would be a grand understatement. He professes to care for animals and other living things while absolutely loathing humankind and finding pleasure in disfiguring and murdering humans who mean nothing to him except as a possible means for scientific experimentation. He is especially hateful towards his step-brother, Cain, Alexis' true and biological son. At one point and perhaps still, he was obsessed with obtaining Cain's beautiful green and gold eyes and keeping them closeby in a specimen jar. He was responsible for ruthlessly killing Meridiana, a girl that he resurrected from the dead and who Cain was briefly in love with. The Doctor believed that Cain in effect stole Alexis, his beloved father, from him when he was born and so deserves to be tormented. Indeed it seems that the only human that mattered to Jezebel in the slightest was his dear, demented, step-father Alexis. Still Jezebel has softened lately and become less absolute in his trust of him following some incidents in which he was forced to face the reality of his mother and sisters' grisly deaths at the hands of 'Delilah' as well as the cooling off of Alexis's attentions now that he is 'Cardmaster' and Jezebel is 'Death'. He often stammers and corrects himself when mistakenly referring to him as 'father' then 'Cardmaster' in front of other members of 'Delilah', Alexis professes to be fond of him though he holds him at a distance. At one point, Jezebel stated that he was every bit Alexis' created possession from his hair to his fingertips. Recently Jez was thrown off guard by the self-sacrificing attitude of his former assistant, Cashian who risked his life to save him and is the first person to truly care for his well-being unconditionally...a concept previously foreign to Jezebel's understanding as he mocked the very idea of it using Cain and Riff's 'objectionable relationship' as an example. More recently, he befriended the intriguingly bent Cassandra Gladstone who played on his inner weaknesses temporarily convincing him to leave Cashian and Alexis' side. He did not flinch when his life was threatened and sometimes even invites death. In the end the person whom Jezebel hates the most is himself. The explanation behind Jezebel's twisted sense of self was revealed even further in 'Misericorde' when his childhood was displayed along with the full extent of Alexis' wanton cruelty and mental torture.

The demented patriarch of the Hargreaves family and Cain and Merry's sick & twisted, womanizing, punishment-loving, pathologically depraved father. He forced intimacy on his own sister, Augusta, with whom he was disturbingly in love with and then named the resulting child Cain after mankind's first murderer. To make matters worse he reinforced the idea that Cain was a bad child who must pay for his sins by whipping him while insisting that he cared for him and loved him. He in turn killed his wife Lenore when she tried to murder Cain for being a child who should never have been born. And as if that wasn't enough, he was also responsible for poisoning his own father, Cain's Godfather. After he leapt to his 'death' and disappeared, Alexis formed the enigmatic and terriyfing occult and science worshipping organization 'Delilah' of which he is the head or 'Cardmaster' using it as a continuing instrument for inflicting anguish on his son declaring himself to be in a sense like God who alone is allowed to punish Cain...the 'Godchild'. He did not stop there with the child torturing and adopted Jezebel after the young child discovered accidentally that his mother was Alexis' mistress. Alexis later took both his sisters and his mother one by one to somewhere far away and they were never heard from or seen again. It is hard to say whether or not somewhere in the pitch black recesses of his mind he cares for Jezebel in earnest or merely views him as just another plaything. Only one thing is truly certain. He seems resolute on dominating the world.

Alexis' cousin and one of the few members of Cain's family who did not shun him at birth. He was secretly in love with Augusta and so felt doubly responsible for safeguarding Cain's existence though he seems unaware of the full extent of Alexis' physical cruelty towards Cain. He felt compassion when he first saw Cain as an infant. He seems to have warmed slightly and granted Cain more leeway in accepting his actions than in the past. At one point, Neil went so far as to blackmail Cain into marrying his cousin Emeline by threatening to reveal who Merry's true mother was. He also found it objectionable that Cain should employ someone as young and therefore untrained like Riff as the head of the household allowing him to dote on him to an unseemly degree. But Neil discovered that Cain was heasdstrong and would have his way. Neil's chief concern now is that Cain does not follow in his father's murderous footsteps continuing the self-destructive cycle of poisoning the father and living a life of madness. He seems baffled by Alexis' tyrannical behavior but thinks that Cain should steer clear of 'Delilah' before more of his friends and family are sacrificed. Neil was attacked by Ida/The Moon, a member of 'Delilah' after a meeting/confrontation with the as yet living Alexis and is currently confined to a wheelchair.

The suave,showy, suspect medium who first appeared in the 'Butterfly Bone' arc and who later reappeared as a source of information into 'Delilah' 's operating secrets of which he apparently became privy to after Alexis offered him the position of 'Magician' which Cle refused. (either that or he deduced the information by using his abilities as a medium) He stated that he had no wish to serve anyone much less such a horrific man as Alexis Hargreaves and seemed impartial to Cain's plight. He was the only son of a noble French family that fell into economic hardship and attempted to support itself by putting it's son forth as a medium who could speak to the departed for a fee. Dominique only really discovered his abilities as a medium after his mother's mysterious death when he was visited by her ghost and up until that point was mostly carrying out an act. He moved to England as an adult and earned a reputation as a gifted psychic. Recently he was involved with a woman who saw too much of 'Delilah' 's secrets and suffered greatly at her loss the circumstances of which have still not been completely revealed. He helped Cain to unravel some of Delilah's plans only after Cain and Riff discovered him hosting a lavish party filled with costumed revelers and illicit substances and threatened to expose him and his indulgences by bribing him with more of his most beloved object-money. It seems that the ruin of his family made him rather bitter as he states that he despises the Ruling Class which he was born into. He has now willingly joined Cain in his fight against his father vowing never to forgive those responsible for Sheila's murder.

Name origin: There are varying interpretations of this name such as the very literal 'Shuzette'. Given the fact that Yuki-sensei's intepretations of Western names are not always perfect and thinking of a name that would exist I though of the female saint though it is open to interpretation.
Cain's cousin though in reality,his half-sister. The only daughter of Cain's biological mother, Augusta, who staged her own death so to speak after she tampered with a dangerous poison from Cain's collection known as 'Emerald Forest'. Unfortunately, her 'Romeo', Miles, did not come to her aid or even attend the funeral once her family had pronounced her dead though he did steal her emerald ring in order to sell it and please his new fiancee, Claire. One evening, Judith clawed her way out of her own grave poisoning the nightwatchman with a touch of her 'green' hand. Cain found her and tried to help but she was determined to see her 'Romeo' so she slipped away and found Miles on his wedding day and poisoned his bride-to-be Claire. She then confronted Miles asking him why he did not wait for her and, holding a bouquet of primroses and the bottle of 'Emerald Forest' behind her back she walked up to him and they both died upon a 'green kiss'. Judith was a lively girl with dark brown hair and large blue eyes like her mother's who grew up around Cain and played with him off and on. At an early age she was described as courageous and adventuresome and also stubborn. Cain said that it was these qualities which drew him to her along with her fierce blue eyes. Despite their relationship Cain was in love with her though she, who was a couple of years or so older than he, fell in love with a fairly fickle and worththless man instead who quickly forgot his 'Juliet'. As distraught as Cain was he did not shed any tears at her grave though a statue of an angel was erected and the ground planted with her favorite flower, the Primrose. Later on her grave was disturbed by Jezebel and co. who stole Judith's large, diamond-shaped emerald ring along with the ring finger in order to create Michaela.

The headstrong daughter of the Lauderdale family and Cain's childhood friend and short-lived fiancee. Uncle Neil blackmailed Cain into an engagement with her. From childhood, Cain remembers her with short hair standing off to the side looking somewhat bashful as if she always had something she wanted to say to him but couldn't. Emeline seemed to have a much stronger sense of self than most of the other characters and though she cared for Cain deeply she hid behind a veil of impetuousness making all around her know that she was only willing to accept life on her own terms and noone else's. She made it rather clear to Cain that she had many suitors and was naturally possessed with a sharp mind, dark hair, dark eyes and vibrant good looks. Oscar seemed especially fond of her and found her arguments with Cain amusing. Despite all this, Cain was never romantically inclined to her though she nevertheless wound up a tragic figure. After a visit to the 'grave' of Maridianna at which point she tore up the daisies adorning her headstone vowing that she would not 'lose' Cain to a dead girl with doll-like beauty, she spied Cain and Riff headed out late at night. In her angered curiousity she went out after them on foot unattended in order to spy on Cain and so fell victim to 'Jack the Ripper' who turned out to be a scapegoat controlled by 'Delilah'. Her last thoughts were that she died not being able to express to Cain her most precious sentiments. Oscar blamed Cain for her death and he, feeling deeply guilty for her demise, had her buried in the Hargreaves cemetery thinking that it would not be right to allow her to be laid to rest with the Lauderdales.

Name origin: I went with the above spelling because of how the "di" is pronounced "dee" in the katakana but mainly because "Mari" and "Dianna" are both Welsh variations of "Mary" and "Diana".
Out of all of the young women surrounding Cain, I have to say that Melodianna was probably the least spunky and the most demure. In 'life' she was another character who fell tragically in love with a worthless man;an innocent child who did not possess a mean bone in her body. The man she hoped to marry was Gilford Lauderdale (older brother to Emeline), a somewhat autistic childhood friend of Merriweather who drifted back and forth between being childlike and being ruthless. Mrs. Everett described her as sweet and gentle and possessing the countenance of an angel. She was rumored to have committed suicide when the man she was in love with left her only to be 'resurrected' later by 'Delilah' with the aid of Jezebel. She has been referred to as a 'paper doll' and a 'deadly doll' who must feed on the blood of the living in order to continue 'living' herself. Cain fell in love with her almost at first glance, a fact that Jezebel et al rigged on purpose like a dark spell with which to trap him and she was the first person he was ever intimate with. He later described the otherwordly attraction he had for her as being linked to her eery blue eyes so much like his mother's and Judith's. Despite her role as a sort of undead person, she seemed genuinely kind by nature, unlike Michaela who was more defiant and devious. At nearly the end of the 'Mark of the Red Ram' arc she intervened as the Doctor prepared to attack Cain in order to aquire his golden eyes wishing for Cain's happiness as she took her own life to save his returning to the bones from which she sprung. Cain had thought at first that he wished to die along with her but he later realized upon remembering her words that he was not alone and that he became unable to shed a tear since the time he parted with his father owing to Riff.
