About Me

I'm the middle child of seven, which has taught me how to be diplomatic. This is a skill that has paid dividends in my "bread-and-butter" job as a Warehouse Manager. I also have an extremely high math aptitude, which is also a big help in the Inventory Control aspect of the job. However, that's not my only interest in life, there are several. Paramount among those is Music. I'm not a musician and have never played an instrument.Plain and simple: I'm a rock writer. I have no formal training whatsoever, but writing always came to me naturally. How I came to write for the Harder Beat wasn’t natural, though. It was March ’97 and I belonged to the Metal Blade Records fan club, which meant they’d arrange a meet-and-greet with any Metal Blade artist touring through the Dallas / Ft Worth area, provided I notified the label fourteen days prior to the show.So I picked up the HB and saw that Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo’s then-new band, Grip, Inc. was playing the Galaxy Club here in Dallas – in eleven days. Realizing that this made meeting Mr. Lombardo impossible, I did the most unreasonable thing I could think of and faxed a blistering letter to editor Linda Hollar, blaming the magazine for denying me this opportunity. Her response? She set up an interview with Lombardo to be conducted by Kevin White, with the caveat that I sit in on the interview. Over the next eight months, and frequent correspondence, Linda expressed that she liked my writing style and offered me a position writing for the magazine. Now, years later I’m still here and eternally grateful to Linda for her foresight and generosity. So anyway, that’s how I came on board with the HB. Music? That’s another story…I was six years old and living on an Iowa farm when everything changed. It was my birthday. I was playing outside and came in to find that my mother had bought me a copy of Kiss’ Rock and Roll Over LP on a trip to the grocery store. Now, up to this point, I was obsessed with Kiss, and when I saw the album propped up on the kitchen table where my mother knew I would see it, I lost it. I don’t remember much of my reaction, but I distinctly remember turning cartwheels down the front walk and just being demented with joy. From that point on, music was everything. If it was aggressive in any way, shape or form, I was awestruck. Throughout the next 30-plus years and a near-constant stream of listening to and reading about musicians, though, my bullshit detector has become pretty keen. When an artist is coasting creatively, I usually pick up on it pretty quickly.Weird part is, through the years, I never wanted to play an instrument. No, my motivation was much more subversive: I had to get into the mindset of the people behind this music called Heavy Metal. Since that fateful day it’s been my mission to figure out what makes these people tick. Am I any closer to reaching my goal today? Not on your life.

My Interests

Women, music, documentaries, books, movies, serenity, sleep, music, women, helping people who need it (though sometimes they don't know they need it) music, food, discovering new bands that are truly visionary, women, collecting rare CD's, Fall, Winter, music, women, mountains and sunsets, stargazing, music, women, the list is endless.

I'd like to meet:

I'd like to meet people who, when listening to music, are transported to another place, a higher plane of existence. Ideally they should have heavy rock / metal leanings, but if you respond to music that's created by people playing real instruments, (with the exception of country music, why bother?) then you're the type of person I can relate to. I don't tolerate people whose sole existence is to bash people or to basically shit on people's spirit. Also, if you're religious or have any religious tendencies, don't bother. I don't want to hear it.

Music:

Music is a massively important part of my life. You can read many of my reviews at www.harderbeat.com as well as my monthly column at the same website called Metal Majors. Mainly I dig metal, (XM Satellite Radio Channel 41) but the more melodic side of things has taken precedence over the last year. I also dig Jazz. (For a wondrous example, check out Lauren Gifford's mesmerizing Sitting Pretty CD.) I also dig New Age (If you have XM Satellite Radio, Channel 77 can't be touched, but either one of Fates Warning guitarist Jim Matheos' two New Age CD's, First Impressions and Away With Words) will prove to be genuinely enchanting listening experiences. As many of you who know me will attest, my tastes are all over the map. What follows is a list of what I've been digging lately. This list is subject to change without notice, and may change daily. Maybe even hourly! :) Read on:Jorn, Masterplan, Helix, The Fixx, Paul Di'Anno, Accept, Abstrakt Algebra, Candlemass, Zoic, Gotthard, Jaded Heart, Robin Beck, Grave Digger, Paul Sabu, Malice, Nik Kershaw, The Dream Academy, Martin Briley, Michael Bolton, Andy Taylor, Tyketto, Evergrey, Trouble, Raven, Venom, Witchfynde, Witchfinder General, King Kobra, TNT, Night Ranger, Bullet Boys, Reckless (the Canadian band that did the Heart Of Steel album and the other one that did the No Frills album) Force Of Evil, Mercyful Fate, Eidolon, Megadeth, early Metallica, Exodus, Testament, Slayer, Arch Enemy, Spiritual Beggars, Armageddon, Krux, Axewitch, Orion The Hunter, RTZ, Great White, Witchery, Metal Church, Vanderhoof, Presto Ballet, Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Alaska, Ayreon, Ambeon, Star One, Stream Of Passion, American Dog, Anathema, Angel Dust, Angel Witch, Bronz, GTR, Angel Dust, Antimatter, Axe, Artch, Antimatter, LID, Wet Animal, Creozoth, Badlands, Russ Ballard, Battleaxe, Bengal Tigers, Black N' Blue, Black Sabbath (the post Ozzy years), Bonfire, Brainstorm, Terry Brock, Breaker, Aftershok, Shok Paris, Cathedral, Tony Carey, Planet P, Rainbow, Celtic Frost, Channel Zero, Masquerade, Slayer, Grip, Inc., Chateaux, Chroming Rose, Danger Danger, Death Angel, Goat Horn, Deep Purple (mainly the stuff from the '90's and today, without Richie Blackmore), Diamond Head, Dio, Dillinger, Diving For Pearls, Doctor Butcher, INXS, Dokken, Electric Boys, Entombed, Europe, E-Z-O, Falconer, Rage, Fastway, Fates Warning, Fifth Angel, Girlschool, Glory, Penance, Green Carnation, Grim Reaper, Hades, Hall Aflame, Hanoi Rocks, Hanover, Hellhammer, Don Henley, Hittman, Holocaust, Heretic, Honeymoon Suite, ICOS, Hurricane, Immortal, Infernal Majesty. Pretty ecclectic huh? And that doesn't even scratch the surface.

Movies:

Lately my favorite movies are Hearts In Atlantis, Spanglish, Super Size Me, Braveheart, Dragonheart, Field Of Dreams (filmed in my home town of Dyersville, Iowa), Phenomenon, Titanic, As Good As It Gets, Finding Forrester, The American President, American Beauty, Sixteen Candles, Back To School, Ferris Beuller's Day Off, Some Kind Of Wonderful, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science. The list goes on and on. Oh, and porn's pretty damn cool too. Do you see a pattern developing here?

Television:

The best shows on TV right now are Curb Your Enthusiasm, Deadwood, Weeds, House, American Justice and Two And A Half Men. However, over the last few years, the greatest shows that never got their due and were unjustly axed were Sports Night and Dead Like Me (That friggin' show was absolutely awesome) Can anybody tell me if that show is truly gone?

Books:

The Dirt by Motley Crue, The Beast by Paul Di'Anno, Gimme an R!: The Helix biography by Helix singer Brian Vollmer, Heavy Metal Thunder: Kick Ass Cover Art From Kick Ass Albums, Fargo Rock City by Chuck Klostermann, The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal, by Martin Popoff, The Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs Of All Time by Martin Popoff, The Top 500 Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time by Martin Popoff, The Collector's Guide To Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties by Martin Popoff, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. White Line Fever by Lemmy Kilminster, Ghost Rider by Neil Peart. There's tons more, but I wont bore you.

Heroes:

Don't really believe in heroes, but some the people I respect the most are my oldest brother Pete, Metal Church guitarist / leader Kurdt Vanderhoof and a huge influence on my writing, Mr. Martin Popoff. There are several, but those three always rise to the surface.
