This is all a dream we dreamed one afternoon

About Me

Kent is writing about himself in the third person now. This is because most people do it that way on the internet--it allows them to make really exaggerated claims about themselves and/or their music, while pretending the claims were actually made by someone else. For example, if I say--I mean, if Kent says--"My music combines the lyrical imagery and profundity of Dylan with the urbane harmonic sophistication of Cole Porter," that sounds a bit egotistical. But if an anonymous third party were to make the same claim, well, who can argue? After all, it COULD be a respected music industry insider or a prominent critic making the point; you just never know. And if a third party says, "As a writer, he's been compared to both Kris Kristofferson and Paul Simon," who's to challenge the comparison? To my knowledge--whoever I am!--Kent has never been actually been compared to Kristofferson or Simon, unless someone might have noticed that he (Kent) is the youngest of the three, and is slightly taller than Paul Simon. However, Kent does want to mention that he moved to Nashville in 2005 to write acoustic/folk/Americana music, hoping to make his mark in yet another venture with dismal prospects for financial success. He also wants you to know that during the years he spent living on the west coast of Ohio he was fortunate to play with some very cool people, including (saxophonist) Greg Abate, (violinist) Mark Wood, and (organist) Hank Marr. He now plays frequently at writers nights around Nashville, and even works a few jazz gigs there; you can see a complete performance calendar on my--I mean his--MySpace page. Some of the song demos here are guitar/vocal, and some are more polished; all were recorded in my (sorry again, HIS) little home studio. He hopes you'll enjoy them, preferably with a cold beverage of your choice.

HOW TO WRITE A COUNTRY SONG

Okay, here's the thing: I was in a particularly bad mood one day about the current state of Nashville songcraft--namely, the constant repetition of certain well-worn cliches and the overall lack of in...
