Somewhere between Classical and Jazz

About Me

My name is Paul and I'm a classical pianist living in Chicago. Looking to meet other musicians and kindred spirits here on MySpace.
For the most part, music is my life. I am mainly a perfomer not a composer. So all the music you will hear on this page was written by someone else. I mainly play music written in the last hundred years and I have a special fondness for ragtime and piano music from the 1910's - 1940's. My favorite composers are: Maurice Ravel, Leos Janacek, Ernesto Lecuona, Charles Griffes, Cyril Scott, Claude Debussy, Billy Mayerl, Rube Bloom, Dana Suesse, Louis Moreau Gottschalk, Lothar Perl, Scott Joplin, Joseph Lamb, James Scott, and several others.
I don't really fit the image of the stereo-typical concert pianist, and I have a lot of other musical interests besides the music I enjoy performing and recording.
Currently I am the Principal Company/Performance Pianist for The Joffrey Ballet. A position I've held since 2002.
Believe it or not, I'm also very much into psychedelic music, both old and new, and am old enough to have listened to underground radio when it was for real. I collect underground newspapers and psych music posters mostly from the Avalon and Fillmore venues.
I also collect ragtime sheet music, piano rolls from the 20's and 30's and 78's from the same periods. I rebuilt a 1920 Cable Euphona player piano a number of years ago and I have a stunning Circassion Walnut VV-XVI Victor Victrola as well.
A martini afficianado, I am always on the lookout for classic cocktails and classy bars.
I would love to exchange ideas and thoughts with all kinds of folks, so if you see (or hear) anything here that interests you, feel free to write. I am always interested in finding new friends here on MySpace, but I would appreciate a note or msg before you request an add. I'm not into collecting anonymous "friends". More than likely if you request to add me without a note of introduction first, your request will be denied. I like personal contact with folks.
My life partner's name is Steve and also has a MySpace page. Click Steve in my friends list below
