is Amanda Montanaro ..
...and while relatively new to the industry, I have already worked with, and been signed under several major record labels; including Plum/West-End Records, Atlantic, etc.
I have been blessed to work with, and be mentored by several Grammy award winning musicians and producers; some have been guiding me since my childhood! Ron Frangipane, Kenny Nix,Peter Gordon,Steve Thompson, and Many Others...***(see homepage)
Being a professional actress my whole life, I studied with David Mamet, Felicity Huffman, and W.H.Macy as the youngest accepted thespian at the Atlantic Theatre Company... (See my home page for acting/modeling credits)
While living the cliche life of an actress in the Hollywood Hills; It occurred to me that I needed to go back to the East Village and get my band back...and reclaim the City I love:but ran from in post 9/11 ptsd... In "classic" Baby 9 fashion, I left everything behind but my lyrics and my guitar(poor Marty...thank God you found my car at L.A.X.!) As fate would have it, that plane ride would become integral in shaping my artistry:)
Well, I've already done the dance thing...I love dance music, but I feel that it isn't neccessarily reflective of the lyrics I have been writing; which are a little more political and "depthy".
As Kenny Nix said, "Deep, you're like Jacques Cousteaux!" As much as I credit Kenny Nix endlessly, and hope to work with him again; the past Dance endeavours were not the right match at the right time....(Mad props and Big love Kenny! ) I couldn't make music that wasn't true to myself.)
I love collaberation, don't get me wrong...I just didn't want to be manufactured into the next Pink. So, all my guy friends in bands are in bands together...and although they often play with me; we have different paths.
The good news is that I have become pretty self sufficient as an artist, as a result.
I started writing music at a young age. From the time I could sit and play a few notes, I was already more interested in composition than in reading "old" music. Both fortunately, and not, somethings never change!
The piano is my second voice, which I have played since 5 or 6 years old. I have always played by ear, which really frustrated my teacher; but saved me at the recitals! Although I must admit, it was not until the " second coming of Leary" that my innate jazz compostitional skills were liberated. White girl got soul! Although my Dad actually taught me on his electric/acoustic Ovation when I was a kid; but my hands were too small, so I would just dance around and sing along to Jim Croce and Rocky the Raccoon.
(Thus an actress was born)!
The signature old school "Baby9" aurablue tracks are all based around the studio model Casio I started to find my sound on during the post grunge era...
As in" Los Angeles", where there is a juxtaposition of A killer bass riff, and this surprisingly innocent sounding vintage casio synth. e-drum loop.
It just made sense for the relevance of the lyrics.
A poetess above all: the lyrics , which pour; that fall: upon the beats create songs!
And so it was that "Babynine" was born in 1996:
A time when Lollapalooza was on its last tour, Li'l Kim was new to the scene, and a time when WE were dreaming up the re-incarnation of the Warhol Factory! Aura Blue Collective! (are YOU in?)
I have often been asked, "How would you describe your sound?" Well, that's where I am still but a soul under construction. As a songwriter; I write music from a standpoint of "storytelling" primarily. My many years in theatre and film have given me a unique way of approaching my music. I literally See it!
Everything I have done thus far in my life has just sort of "channeled" through me. Regarding my "body of work" to date, I have yet to scratch the surface! Like many artists, I have a tale to tell.. and this tale has in part inspired me; yet has also kept me from reaching the proverbial brass ring at a young age.
( I find this to be a blessing, in many ways. )
The time I have spent in "frustration" forced me to focus upon my own abilities as a musician; rather than become dependant upon any one else. This being said, however~ Depending ipon what producer I'm working with, or which musicians I am collaberating with; I have written scores upon scores of original songs. Regardless- I have enough material to pull a "Milli Vanilli" with Prince! lol :-)
But above all else, My drive to create is a spiritually guided adventure! If you listen closely to my lyrics.. I bet you can guess which Angels have tea with me.
("but you may be Unlike Me....")
Onelove, Babynine
***If you are digging these really bare "scratch" tracks... and are a musician, or producer, engineer....etc who are looking to collaberate, just drop me a line! , ***
