About Me
Jeff Coplan is definitely a producer on the move. After relocating to New York City from Montreal, Canada, Coplan has been on a nonstop climb from multifaceted musician to prolific songwriter, producer and engineer. Although based in the Big Apple, Coplan's projects take him around the world, whether for far-flung recording sessions or through the international airplay of his musical productions. Besides his sheer love of music, his dedication to helping artists record their best work keeps him moving forward and upward at a steady pace.BEGINNINGSSince the age of 10, Coplan was enamored with music. He soon began writing and recording his own songs. "I always wanted to be an artist," remembers Coplan. "Back in the days of cassette four-track recorders, I would record my own songs. That was the only affordable home studio situation and that's how I first started." By cutting his teeth in this manner, Coplan's passion for music blossomed into serious career aspirations and prompted a physical move on his part. At that point, he felt he wanted to be 'where all the action was' and making a move to New York was his best bet. "Moving to New York set everything into motion," reflects Coplan. "After that, I never looked back." Invigorated by the move, he jumped headfirst into the American recording industry. While pursuing a record deal as a rock artist, Coplan utilized his consummate skills as an engineer to work for a New York recording studio. In doing so, he began to feel a powerful attraction to the art of music production. Through working with a wide variety of music at his new job, Coplan began to realize what he had to offer as a producer and engineer. His skills as a songwriter shined while collaborating with other musicians and his experience as an instrumentalist and programmer offered much to the music going to tape. By the time he was 26 years old, Coplan was firmly focused on being a full-time producer. In 1995 after shifting his focus from being an artist to being a writer/producer, Coplan quickly came into his own. "My jump to doing major label records was made possible early on writing and programing dance music," he explains. "Since I had a programming background, I could do any MIDI programming that was needed." Despite his MIDI savvy, Coplan vows that he always incorporates real instruments into his productions, even within heavily programmed arrangements. "I love recording live instruments; I play guitar, bass, keyboards, and drums. I don't think I've ever done a production that was all MIDI.""I got my first break into the pop/rock world in 1997 with a group called the Moffatts," tells Coplan. "For the project, I wrote all the songs and got to do more of a pop/rock production, instead of dance. It was nice because although I enjoyed doing dance music, it really wasn't what I ultimately wanted to be known for. The Moffatts project opened up another world of possibilities for me. After their international success I moved full time into the pop/rock realm." That album ended up selling more than 2 million copies. Since then, Coplan has applied his unique approach to a variety of successful productions.ALL THINGS ORGANIC AND ELECTRONICThe Coplan approach to music production is a delicate balance between song crafting prowess, cutting-edge recording technology and a knowing human touch. Because Coplan is an accomplished songwriter, an adept musician and a knowing engineer, the music recorded in his sessions seemingly combines the abilities of three separate professionals. And in today's increasingly "assembly-line" production environment, Coplan's organic, hands-on approach is truly a breath of fresh air. His varied musical skills (whether playing acoustic instruments or within the realm of MIDI programming) creates the environment where Coplan produces new and refreshing pop, rock, and dance music.REACHING INTERNATIONALLYAn ironic aspect of Jeff Coplan's career is how he was able to leave his Canadian home and venture south to the United States, soon producing multi-platinum selling hits in his homeland. From Canadian groups 'Sky' to 'McMaster and James' to 'The Moffatts', Coplan operated out of his New York studio and shipped home masters that would be destined to sell millions. Now, from his Brooklyn studio, Coplan is seeing the sky as the limit.Coplan is signed as a songwriter with Zomba/BMG Music Publishing and was previously signed to Warner Chappell Music. Coplan has written for various artists including Lindsay Lohan, Bowling For Soup, Turkish sensation Tarkan, Nick Carter, She Moves, Naturally 7 and Kyle Riabko, to name a few. His total albums sold has recently passed 6 million copies. From his current projects on to new recording sessions on the horizon, Jeff Coplan is staying busy and further solidifying his reputation as a songwriter, producer and engineer on the move. Through the creation of perfected pop and rock music tracks, Coplan is focused on grabbing the ears of music fans in the United States, Canada, Europe and the rest of the world.
