Coming through with lyrical skills that make Latinas proud, and machistas shutter, Cielo is an avant-garde in the Latin hip-hop scene. This Colombian born MC is able to fluidly and cleverly spit verses in English or her native Spanish, stirring feeling with phrases such as "el tiempo viene/ pero no se detiene/ mi pecho me quema como trago de agauardient." Her inspiration is drawn from life experiences and her desire to achieve this hip-hop dream, as well as the plight of many Latinos struggling in this country. Although her music is primarily written for a Spanish speaking audience, her melodic flow makes it possible for even Japanese kids to enjoy the sound of words kicking and sliding off her tongue.
Cielo has been writing since she learned to hold a pen, winning writing competitions since her days in grammar school. Through the years her writing has evolved from poetry, to slam, to rap and most recently to rap in Spanish. Making her way from Colombia, to Mexico, LA, and finally to the East Coast, Cielo has found her home in New Jersey and her pseudo home in NYC. Her craft has been honed at spots like Nuyorican Poets Caf, The New York Comedy Club, Down Time, Supper Club, and SOBs among other clubs in NY and NJ. Shes appeared on Rutgers College radio, Sabado Gigante (the longest running weekly television show in history), and The Roof (Spanish BET & Park equivalent). Prior to setting her focus strictly on hip-hop, Cielo starred as a dancer in a Nike commercial, and a hip-hopper in the award winning, off Broadway play, Corner Wars.
Her introduction to poetry came via West Coast rap, where she bobbed her head to the likes of NWA and Dr. Dre, among other West Coast pioneers. Artists such as Tribe Called Quest, Rakim, and The Roots, further ingrained her affinity for hip-hop. The influence of Salsa, the sound she grew up on before moving to the US, can also be heard in her music. Cielos current goal is to reach the Spanglish speaking masses with her lyrics, as well as to give non-Spanish speakers a connection to this growing Latin culture through her music.
