Raw Smilez music quest started in 2001 just as a hobby. Early beginnings saw Smilez and friends from school form a group that went by the name of Urban Rhymez. Initially for fun it quickly evolved into more productive activity with weekly sets on pirate radio stations Code 10 and Infastep fm. Soon enough, Smilez moved on up to Live Linq, an already established music sound.
This move expanded Smilez’ horizons and exposed him to shows up and down the country from London to Birmingham, Leicester and Wolverhampton. The group featured in a documentary broadcast on BENTV sky digital. This generated a good response for Smilez and his fan-base started to grow. Late 2004 Smilez figured he had reached the pinnacle of what he could achieve as a Live Linq member and due musical differences he left.
Smilez is more recently known for playing an influential part of west London grime outfit, HOT OFF DA BLOCK (HODB). HODB performed at a number of shows such as South Kilburn Festival and worked with some well known names in the UK music industry including: Musical Mob, SLK, Murk Boys, and Purple (to name but a few).
Although being labelled as 1 of west London’s finest, for Smilez it hasn’t come easy. Like many artists he’s been through his ups & downs, set backs & what not. Smilez showed grit & determination to bounce back. Realising that it wouldn’t just come on a plate, he decided to take everything into his own hands. Wanting to take full artistic control he did a sound engineering course which meant he could record, mix down, promote and distribute his 1st mix CD RAW STYLEZ vol.1.
The mixtape was released to coincide with the video of the underground hit, J.WING - T.R.U.E West mcs on CHANNEL U, in which Smilez featured, he was finally starting to get the recognition he deserved for all the hard work he’d put in.
