About Me
Raised in the thriving metropolis of Independence, Kansas, Chelsea Laswell's acoustic pop music is full of life and energy, powered by her electrifying voice and soulful, catchy lyrics. After playing shows and festivals as a solo act throughout the southern Kansas area, Chelsea began college at the University of Kansas as an undecided freshmen. With only her guitar Black Betty and best buddies/roomies Claire and Megan by her side, she began a journey to share original music inspired by her life with the world...The Lawrence music scene would never be the same.Fall of 2006 saw a change in the winds that batter Daisy Hill in Lawrence, Kansas. In the lobby of the infamous McCollum Hall Dormitory, two musicians and fellow students at the University of Kansas would begin a quest to dominate the midwest with a new sound from the heartland. On that summer night in the dorm lobby, Ben Azzi was tinkering on the piano with some compadres. When he looked up from the piano, the beautiful Chelsea Laswell was standing beside him and the two hit it off. After a few jam sessions took place, the wheels began to turn at lightning speed. Soon after this milestone meeting of two friends, "The Calvary" was born. The group featured Chelsea as the frontwoman with her guitar "Black Betty", Ben on drums, Matt Bray on lead guitar, and Dave Supica holding it down with the bass. The group quickly began to play shows all through the Lawrence and Kansas City areas. With stunning musicianship and a captivating live performance, the group grabbed the attention of many KU students.Though the success was sweet, it would be short lived. Dave Supica was picked up by another group and the drive of the teenagers was lost soon after. "The Calvary" was defeated. But out of the ashes, Chelsea and Ben continued to write music. With Ben's relocation to the District of Columbia to further his education in the music industry, the two used the move to their advantage. At the beginning of 2007, what is destined to be and epic year for the duo, the two recorded a demo at Studio 8121 in Silver Springs, MD. Under the direction of Mike (the engineer with a really odd last name), Chelsea and Ben knocked out 5 killer tracks in 3 days. With a scheduled release in Feb. 2007, the anticipation of this diabolical sound can be felt from the hills of Lawrence to the nation's capitol. The two are in the process of scheduling a short tour over the summer throughout the midwest with long time friend Dave McNally on the bass. For being together for only a few months, expect the unexpected from these two kids with big dreams. With new fans popping up left and right, the cult following of Chelsea Laswell is growing exponentially. With so much talent and so much potential, it would be wise to stay tuned as the debut demo hits MYSPACE in February 2007.
