About Me

Tena koutou katoa. This is the myspace of Melanie Tahata, also known as Maleficent.
I am of Ngati Porou descent. My hapu are Te Whanau a Hinetapora, Te Whanau a Rakairoa and Ngai Taamanuhiri. I currently live in Turanga-Nui-a-Kiwa, Aotearoa [Gisborne, New Zealand], with my son Tawhai.
I am an indigenous gothic mixed media artist; working in illustration, photography, bricolage and website design. I enjoy making zines, writing blogs, drawing, learning reo and traditional children's songs.
I have been involved in, and am an avid supporter of, the DIY underground music community of Aotearoa. I've worked as a DJ, promoter, event co-ordinator, roadie, and lately as a web site designer and maintainer.
I have recently completed a solo exhibition called Mauri Ora at the Tairawhiti Museum and Art Gallery. You can view images from this and other work on my web site : http://maleficent.mediatrix.co.nz
