About Me

Ay yo... can I holla atchu fer a second???
Many of you know me because I go out dancing a lot. I've been dancing since about 1989 and now it's like my lifeline. I started with house and hip hop (1990 Chubb rock jumps up on the scene/With a lean/And a pocket full of green!). I didn't dance for awhile during my play-every-sport-as-much-as-possible phase. I learned from my dad who did every rock'n'roll dance craze. never ceased to amaze me how this white, middle-aged engineering professor could rock like he was brown or beige.
I also studied at Arizona State University and got a B.S. (ha!) in Industrial Design. I used to design messenger bags & luggage, but being told to copy Samsonite and Tumi every day got sluggish. Now I do graphic design. I am a design junkie, acrylic paint and CMYK floods my veins. Typographic grids descend in me like seattle rain. i listen to new music....like ALL DAY EVERY DAY--turn on BBC radio to hear gilles and benji play.

Biography
Initially inspired by Motown music and Soul Train, Daniel "DanSir" Genalo first performed hip-hop and house dance in 1990. Though mostly self-taught, DanSir crafted his style from a variety of movement vocabularies, including House, Hip-Hop, Locking, Popping, Rocking, Capoeira Angola, Tap, Bebop, African, and Latin dance styles. Daniel trained and worked with dance groups Sour Patch, HouseBroken, Vissi Dance Theater, Kundu Dance Co., and The House Dance Project. He has also worked with Al Gore's Current TV: "Take Back TV" (Lauryn Hill, De La Soul, Slum Village), Mr. V (Sole Channel Music), Louie Vega/Masters at Work, Wunmi, The Blue Note Jazz Club NY (with The Boundary Band), DJ Senbad (Ricanstruction Records), and Charlie Sheen's "No Code of Conduct." In 2005, Dan won the B-boy Hodown House Dance competition with dance partner Junious Brickhouse. Most recently, Dan has been teaching, judging competitions, choreographing and performing throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia.
Addendum
Aside from dance, Daniel is an accomplished designer, writer and visual artist. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design (with Magna Cum Laude honors) from Arizona State University, and he has worked in Product, Graphic, and Interior Design across the US, as well as in Italy and China. With solo exhibits of his painting and photography, as well as some work in journalism, short fiction, and poetry/spoken word performance, Daniel is a well-rounded artist.

Performance

Performing is one of my favorite ways to exchange dance. As a writer, designer and visual artist, I appreciate art in pieces or stories. I like to see a movement concept through story, or just good pure dancing. Whatever the intention is, I most appreciate clear, creative, confident execution of that idea. Performing is also a rather positive way for individual expression, rather than the sometimes negative energy of competition/battles.
Vissi Dance Theater - "MelbaBCD"
This is the premier performance of this piece on May 6, 2006 in New York, NY. I'm the 1st one out on stage, in the blue shirt with tie & hat.
+++++++
Teaching
I focus on foundation moves (with history and names), variations on those moves, history of the dance and music culture, expression of the music, concepts of full body positioning, and combinations of and transitions to/from foundation movements.
House Dance workshops
These workshops took place in Europe & Asia in 2007. The sample clips show common styles or "foundations" seen in house and club dance: jacking, stomping, skating, footwork, lofting & vogueing & wacking. I also teach history of the dance & culture, musicality & how to listen, variations, full body positioning & technique, and combinations of movement styles.
+++++++++
Competition

Although competition is beneficial for progression of skill, House and related dances have become increasingly and overly focused on battles. People around the world know certain dancers by what battle they have won or done well in, and new competitions are showing up all the time. Competitions can be positive, but in my experience there are other more positive ways to exchange and share dance information. And nothing gets me open like those rare personal and spiritual moments lost in the music... 3am at the club... sweating... exhausted. Fights and battles are not my inspiration--music is my inspiration!
+++++++++
Judging Competition
When I evaluate dance, I look for Musicality/Rhythm, Creativity/Originality, Vocabulary/Diversity, Clarity/Technique, and finally Composition/Choreography.

My Design/Art Works
see examples below or click here for more.
Urban Artistry
This is a promo piece I designed for the "Urban Artistry" dance course, at a new art school & dance studio in Washington, D.C. The instructor's sophisticated, classic sense of style within hip-hop culture drove the design--mixing simple, clear typography with references to city life and hip-hop culture in the imagery and colors.
Jazzy Jeff Flyer
This is the flyer I designed for event showcasing all elements of hip-hop. DJ Jazzy Jeff, Mad Skillz, and Furious Styles Crew were the features performers representing 3 of 4 elements of hip-hop (DJing, MCing, bboys/breakin). The flyer itself constitutes the 4th element of graffiti or art, with paint splatters and bright colors on more neutral backgrounds--a reference to the vivid colors painted by graffiti artists on dirty, grey/white/brown/etc. walls throughout cities everywhere.
"At Large" or "@ LG"
This stencil depicts an angry homeless man, representative of so many like him who are victims of societal conditions and governmental neglect. Although many often have negative attitudes toward these people, very little aid is given to reverse their adverse mental and physical conditions, leaving them "at large" in the streets.
Photography
Photo of apartment units in London -- from a photo journal done in London about 7 years ago. This was taken in the Camden area of northern London.

I'd like to meet:

Anyone with a lazy eye...people who swim skies and ask why? audiophiles with soul, souls to share files. those who understand my wiles run for miles but it's playful beguile. verbal tricks when i mix and mince words with conflict. basically i'm balanced, gemini with many talents. i'd like to meet the same--jacks and jills to trade skills. i like dreamseekin, rhyme leakin, and beat freakin 'ricans...those speakin fresh about philosophical teachin. those who be peepin french film like la haine. those who have pain, express themselves and aren't the same. creative types--those who rock capers with pen and paper. concept sketchin, reppin ideas the world beckons. i like the words of family dynamics painted on paper by Zadie Smith. When I look at shannyn sossamon i'm in a state of bliss. Form fashion of yves behar fully feels like perfection. the entire collection of words, erection of terse verbs. scattered and splattered, s p r e a d f a r a n d w e e gets me cummings back for more e.e....historical, social lore: saul williams hits my core. rhythms he beats, jazz breaks--like erykah exhalates. philip seymour hoffman, the chameleon of character roles. the hymns of humor in verse by beau sia make me roll. jamaica kincaid searched my soul, tribulation tales of woman's role. filled up holes within, but you can't fill up this hole man--the revolution will not happen between sarah jones' thighs...or televised when gil scott's rappin--correctin' lies. media sappin life out of the country--just ask michael moore. more and more, GW does horror, but is that better than Gore's bore? savion glover taps into souls--the sole flame carrying the chain. then there's the godfather himself, funky president James. jean grae played with words, what? what?, female verse. i'd hit rewind, listen again and bug out when she'd disperse....."ahhh the track smacks, dynamic up on the wax, consider the facts, we never let your neck re-lax." spanish simplicity in story, songs of family by sandra cisneros.......

arrows connect my words and ideas with these figures, i figure...i collect a piece here, and there i build bigger. architect of mine own, refrain to cite a name here. too many builders and draftsman to claim up in the game. self-expression's what i aim--i look to those who do the same.

Or maybe i should just meet these japanese girls?

It's unfortunately too late, but this man has been one of the very biggest inspirations throughout my life. And this is probably the best footage of him I have seen!
