Since his debut in 1954, Godzilla has remained one of cinema's most enduring icons, with appearances in 28 films through his 50th anniversary in 2004. Director Ishiro Honda's original film Gojira (released in the US as Godzilla - King of the Monsters) introduced a monster with atomic breath, or a heat ray, inspired by King Kong and The Beast from 20, 000 Fathoms. The thoughtful and tragic aspects of the film, accompanied by a masterful film score by composer Akira Ifukube, added a depth to Godzilla that compelled and inspired many other writers and directors since to make each action-packed Godzilla film more than a monster movie, and Godzilla himself the true King of the Monsters.
