Rebecca and Ryan Coseboom have taken their songs and pulled them from each end, elongating and opening up the space within, light pouring from every hole. Beneath Trembling Lanterns - the pairs first album apart from their Halou project applies their unique songwriting points-of-view and inventive production to much wider canvases, creating stark landscapes of pure expression and exposition.
Originally, I think the idea was to make a quieter, more abstract record than we usually do, says Ryan, when asked about the motives for initiating the project. As we went on, I think our goals changed and the results are much more interesting to me than our original plans were.
Though many of the nine pieces on Beneath Trembling Lanterns are fuzzy lullabies that may ease the somnolent masses, the record uses intricate, sometimes aggressive drum programming along with warm analog tones and varied organic instrumentation to create an intense experience that demands your full attention.
We talked about experimenting with moody, dreamy music created with gritty, toothy, sometimes jarring elements, remembers Rebecca, whose lyrics on the album plumb new levels of almost uncomfortable honesty and vulnerability. Her words of loss and longing are delivered with such sincerity and precision that one cannot help but listen to them with heavy-hearted empathy. Making this album has been simultaneously challenging, frustrating, electric, and wonderful, she continues. The end result is exuberance and I am thrilled.
