About Me
What genre do you play? Usually an easy question to answer for DJ’s to answer. But for Diskokitty, this question can only be answered by saying, “..Depends on my mood and the atmosphereâ€. Diskokitty, can be found playing a mix (including hybrids or compilations) of anything from break beats, hip hop, house, 80’s, rock, you can pretty much name it “if it’s goodâ€, she points out. Why no focus? She states music is too good to box yourself into one genre, it gets repetitive and boring. “I have musical ADD, I need the music to not only move me, but to take me somewhere and tell me something, not just bang aimlesslyâ€. There are great parts and sounds that can be found in all music, and that’s what makes music so great. So is she a jack of all trades and a master of none? She smirks and replies, “More like a jack of all trades, Master of Musicâ€.
Diskokitty, named, Margot Rudy, developed this philosophy growing up as a practicing musician. Since the age of four, Diskokitty has practiced, and performed music for audiences and doesn’t plan ..ping any time soon. Whether it be as the feature of a performance or in the background, it is DK’s aim to provide pleasing sounds to the musical connoisseurs, and have a good time while doing it. Starting out as a classical pianist, DK learned the art of being at center stage and commanding a performance, and also the art of accompaniment, which has allowed her to orchestrate the proper ambiance for finicky audiences. “Sometimes a good musician doesn’t need to bang it, people don’t always want to hop around like mad, sometimes, they just want to sit back and listen; bathe in the sunlight of the sound. Music is quite powerful, it can sooth you, it can move you, but it can also be a weapon and quite assaulting if it’s inappropriately playedâ€.
How did Diskokitty go from a classical background to being a DJ? Diskokitty has always emersed herself into the music scene. As a college student she hosted several punk shows, having bands such as the Blue Meanies, Jake’s Leg and the Bollweavils play at in her basement known as the “Hive†(the house was yellow and a wasp nest next to the cellar door entrance). At one of her parties she met a young lady from the Superstars of Love and thus was introduced to the rave scene. Diskokitty went to her first rave in St. Louis, got her financial aide, and bought her first Technics (which she still uses, from yes, the mid-90’s). From then, Diskokitty started to passing out fliers for both punk shows and raves. She then moved to Las Vegas to complete her education and it was there where she got her first real DJing gig at a rave. She spun Drum and bass as the trains passed and people hollered at a rave in a warehouse called the Candy Factory. She was hooked.
For the next 8 years Diskokitty has consistently maintained involvement and performed in the electronic music scene. Diskokitty has performed at such events as Burning Man 2004, 2005, 2006, BlueShift, Caveman, Devil’s Knight, Wonderland, Pilgrims and Indians.
