About Me

I'm a freelance journalist covering primarily music and culture of the underground variety. You can see my work in the LA Weekly, Razorcake and a handful of other fine publications.I grew up in LA and have been actively involved in the club scene since I was a teenager, first as a DJ and, later on, as a writer. I spent my college years holed up on the fourth floor of LMU's student center while spinning records at KXLU, and then played at Coven 13 on Sunday nights. After college, I had residencies at Bang! and Beat It and promoted/DJed a club called Transmission. These days, I prefer to watch the scene with my tape recorder and notebook in hand. I truly believe that this is the best time to be a club kid in LA, probably because the real world is such a mess. Inside the DIY spaces, there's a heady mix of frustration and joy that is beautiful and inspiring. I'm happy to be able to document it.Here are some recent stories:The New Dark Age LA Weekly 4/23/08Modeselektor: Dance-Floor Saviors plus Wallflowers of the Polo Field LA Weekly 4/16/08Weird Ripper: Baseck Redefines Dance Music LA Weekly 2/20/08Droid Behavior: Robot Rock LA Weekly 1/16/08
You are Arthur Rimbaud - a vital, cannon-changing
poet with a flare for tantrums. You tend to
write in a fever, and have a liking for the
disordered mind. Do't expect people to
understand you, for you are ahead of your time.

A Few Words on Surveys

I feel like a douchebag posting surveys on My Space everyday. Surveys are dumb, but since every stupid question deserves a stupid answer, I feel obliged to answer. That said, since I have my own dam...

Why I Hate The News

Yesterday, I decided to do the big Armo thing with a friend of mine. We began our day at the Armenian Monument in Montebello, only to find out that we either had the wrong time or the thing was five ...

You Snooze You Loose

Afrika Bambaataa was on fire Sunday night. He, er, how you say, "rocked it old school." No fancy tricks. Nothing that would break the groove. Just a flawless mix of hip hop, electro without the cl...

The Question of The Day

If a person who swears exhibits a limited knowledge of vocabulary, does the person who refers to another as a "fucking penurious shrew" have a poor grasp of the English tongue?

Overrated Turd

I get home last night and SNL is on. I'm rarely home to see it, which isn't a big deal since it hasn't been funny in ages. But, Outkast was playing and, well, you know, it was on and I really couldn...

Oh Gore Vidal, my only friend, even you have kissed more boys than I have.

Not that the afore-mentioned headline has anything to do with this post, but any excuse to quote The Simpsons is a good one. I have a page on diaryland. It's: http://msgolightly.diaryland.com. You...
