Influences:Westminster, Maryland, home to Gatsby Gets The Green Light, is a mere twenty minutes from Baltimore, astrong force on the East Coast underground music scene. With the gritty of inner city hardcore, the sweet-tempered pop of Towson andsurrounding suburbia, and the constant stream of influence from prominent Washington D.C. and Tri-State area acts, Baltimore has strickenitself necessary as a major tour stop - for the first time in 2006, Vans Warped Tour swung a compulsatory detour just a couple minutes fromthe city.
Our story begins on the Ernie Ball Stage at this aforementioned Warped Tour date. Gatsby Gets The Green Light is making their firstappearance on the national tour. As winners in the celebrated Ernie Ball Battle of The Bands, the foursome was selected to represent theirmusical community. The performance was the first date on their summer tour with Thin Dark Line (111 Records) and All Time Low(Hopeless/Subcity) and the release of their debut EP, Choose Your Own Adventure.
Cooped up for two months in guitarist Trevor Simpson’s home recording studio, Gatsby self-produced and recorded Choose Your Own Adventure, mulling over even the slightest specifics and deliberating for days over a singular frill. The EP was mixed by Ronni Santmyer in Baltimore, and mastering was completed by Joe Lambert (Kanye West, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah). When the finished product finally reached the band, therewere very few hesitations. “In the end we had a debut EP we were very confident in,†says singer Rory Pettingill. While the band carries acatalog of a previously released 5-song demo, recorded in December of 2005, Choose Your Own Adventure is a refined representation of therelentless effort the four employ in their music.
Much to the pleasure of their now solid Maryland following, the EP quickly became a summer anthem under the sweltering Baltimore heat. Thedancy guitar of the first single, “Under The Sheets†and humble croon of Pettingill sparked away messages like wild fire. Choose Your OwnAdventure is a healthy dose of swooning pop, specialized by more than just gentle melodies and unruffled transitions. In “Steady,†Gatsbyalternates between delightful electronics and quick-witted percussion that makes for extreme toe-tapping. The band takes full advantage oftheir production environment; all “samples†and subtle electronics found throughout the CD are seamlessly incorporated into their liveperformances.
Whereas some bands need the outside creative input of a producer, Gatsby used self-production to their advantage. “It was great. We saved alot of money and got a whole lot tighter as a musical unit,†says Pettingill. The four are certainly weathered to the Baltimore undergroundmusic scene; their name is installed into powerhouse venues such as Recher Theatre, Fletcher’s Bar, and Sonar. With Choose Your OwnAdventure, Gatsby is proving that perfection is a virtue.
