10.11.08 :: PLASTIC CARAMELO (BROOKLYN) - The people said "mmmm..." and a new genre called Glampeta emerged from the chaotic rhythms of New York. A fusion of Colombian Dancehall, Cumbia, and Champeta. With the inimitable electronic Brooklyn bass that pours out of the jeeps and rolls down the streets like water from the hydrants in the summertime, Glampeta is fast becoming the soundtrack of a new wave of Colombians in New York. It's a truly international mixture fueled in equal parts by Afro-Carribean music, Pop Art, and Brooklyn loft parties. The project was put together by La Fabrica, the collective of Colombian media artists and fashion designers Tatease, Lichi, Eddie Whyte, Gasparhymes, Pao Pao, Vivi Lewis, La Nena Sierra, and Momo in conjunction with music producers Christian Castagno and Danny Blume of GoodandEvil. The explosive chemistry of the group instantaneously yielded a new summer hit and a Warhol inspired video directed by Tatiana and Christian Castagno that's banging the speakers hard, as it spreads throughout the underground. Viva la buena vibra, viva la paz y la musica, viva la Glampeta!Check them out here: myspace.com/plasticcaramelo
10.25.08 :: MONARETA (COLOMBIA/BROOKLYN) - The group has previously released two digital albums, ‘La Bonanza’ and a self-titled release, via Nacional’s digital label. Their music has been featured in the soundtracks for movies like “La Mujer de Mi Hermano†and TV shows like mun2’s “Chicas Projectâ€. Monareta also has a new song on the soundtrack for the upcoming Warner Pictures film “Pride & Gloryâ€. Monareta first came together when composer, producer and vocalist Andres Martinez started mixing break beats and hip hop flows with keyboardist Camilo Sanabria in clubs and electronic music festivals throughout their hometown of Bogota. “Growing up, even as young as 11, I was really involved in the local freestyle streetbike scene,†Martinez recounts. “It was the 80s and all the streetbikers in Colombia were heavily influenced by the break-dance and electric boogaloo music styles arriving from the U.S. We heard groups like the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy and they completely changed our lives. The brands of our bikes were not Mongoose or GT. We had Monaretas. And so that’s how we got the name for our group—it’s a homage to the ’80s break-dance, hip hop, BMX and fashion scene sounds that came from abroad to influence us in South America.†Once Monareta began to develop their sound, Martinez received a Fulbright scholarship to pursue a Master of Arts in composition and film scoring at New York University. He moved from Bogota to New York City and immersed himself in the local scene. Monareta found a receptive crowd in the electro haven of Brooklyn and Martinez integrated what he was learning with his studies into the group’s cinematic sound. “It’s the whole idea of telling a story without showing images,†Martinez says. “In our case, we don’t use many lyrics either. Instead, we use sound textures to build atmospheres and allegories to certain images and ideas.†While fellow Colombians Sidestepper combine electronic music with salsa, Monareta mixes electronic music with cumbia and champeta, the Afro-Colombian genre native to the streets of the country’s Caribbean coast. They also incorporate the reggae, dub and calypso sounds popular in the coastal cities. On ‘Picotero’, the track “Llama†displays this fusion, where the cumbia upbeat flows seamlessly with a reggae groove and dub vocals. Recently, the group has split time living in Colombia and Brooklyn, while performing across the U.S. Earlier this year, Monareta showcased at South by Southwest and North by Northeast in Toronto.

10.25.08 :: OFFICIAL FILM SCREENING AFTER PARTY FOR SLEEP DEALER: By Director Alex Rivera - In the near future, the world's borders are completely sealed…except for a giant digital network linking people around the world. In Mexico, workers plug their bodies into computers to labor from afar for huge first-world companies. Some even sell their memories online. But not everyone is happy to become a virtual robot. Three strangers in Tijuana eventually risk their lives to connect with each other--and break the chains of technology.
Screening is on Saturday, October 25, 6:30 - 8:30 pm @ El Museo's Teatro Heckscher: 1230 Fifth Avenue, between 104th and 105th Streets, Manhattan. Admission: Free.

[NAKO-TEK] Nacotheque - The name Nacotheque was made up of the words “Naco†(often used in Mexican Spanish to describe bad-mannered people. Kinda equivalent to the American “White Trashâ€) and “Discothequeâ€. The name has a meaning all in it’s own - representing music not only from Mexico, but Spanish-sung music from around the globe and sharing it with an eclectic selection of music fans.
THE NACOTHEQUE MISSION ::
There are tons of new, old, rare, and yet to be discovered artists that beat the stereotypes of Spanish-sung music. The more people that know about it the better the public can be educated in what is considered the alternative to Latin music.
WHAT IS NACOTHEQUE? A PARTY, A BRAND, A TASTEMAKER.
Nacotheque is a dance party in NYC that highlights new and old, popular and obscure music from all over Latin America and Spain of rock n’ roll, new wave, indie rock, baile-funk, nouveau-eighties, electropop, disco, cumbia, punk, and some hip-hop. The party happens every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month at Fontana’s in the Lower East Side/Chinatown area.
Nominiated by PAPER magazine “Best New Party of 2007†and dubbed as “NYC’s hottest indie rock party en español†by URB magazine, Nacotheque has become one of the most unique events in New York City’s underground scene. Nothing says “awesome†when realizing that we’ve created an outlet for Latinos and Non-Latinos (who speak Spanish or not at all) to come together and enjoy and discover new music in a diverse and fun environment.
In addition to being a party, Nacotheque has become a recognized brand to Spanish-sung Latin alternative music that allows us the privilege to introduce new artists to a generation of music and pop culture hungry people all over the world.
WHO ARE THE PRODUCERS BEHIND NACOTHEQUE?
Since February of 2006 Juan Ramirez (Marcelo Cunning) and Amylu Meneses (Amylulita) have been producing Nacotheque. By blending their own event production backgrounds and musical tastes Marcelo and Amylu take on the responsibility to seek out music and share it with Nacotheque fans.
In addition to sharing the music in a party setting, the Nacotheque producers recently spoke at NYU on the culture and scene that has been developed for young Latinos and Non-Latinos. It’s exciting when we get emails and comments from people saying how they never thought Spanish-sung music was actually cool, but now they have discovered a whole new world of indie music!
