To a greater force, and to a better nature, you, free, are subject, and that creates the mind in you, which the heavens have not in their charge. Therefore if the present world go astray, the cause is in you, in you it is to be sought.
--- Dante Alighieri
On a new gravestone in England right after World War Two:
'There is not enough darkness in all of the world to put out the light of one small candle.

The most sublime act is to set another before you.

I take no more notice of the wind that comes out of the mouths of critics than of the wind expelled from their backsides.

When the regime ordered
Books with dangerous knowledge
To be burned in public and everywhere
Oxen were forced to pull, carts with books
to the bonfires, one of the persecuted poets
discovered one of the best
studying the list of the burned
disconcerted, that his books were forgotten.
He rushed to his desk, flying on wings of rage
and wrote a letter to the the authorities.
Burn me! he wrote with a quick stroke
Burn me! don't do this to me! Do not spare me!
Have I not always reported the truth in my books?
Yet now you treat me as were I a liar!
I command you: Burn me! "
Bertolt Brecht
If the doors of perception were cleansed every thing would appear to man as it is, infinite. For man has closed himself up, till he sees all things thru' narrow chinks of his cavern.
--- William Blake
Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.
--- Thomas Edison
Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
Robert Frost
It is unwise to be too sure of one's own wisdom. It is healthy to be reminded that the strongest might weaken and the wisest might err.

"If you take the Christian Bible and put it out in the wind and the rain, soon the paper on which the words are printed will disintegrate and the words will be gone. Our bible IS the wind and the rain."
Herbalist Carol McGrath as told to her by a Native-American woman.
The minstrel boy to the war is gone,
In the ranks of death you'll find him;
His father's sword he hath girded on,
And his wild harp slung behind him;
"Land of Song!" cried the warrior bard,
"Tho' all the world betrays thee,
One sword, at least, thy right shall guard,
One faithful harp shall praise thee!"
The Minstrel fell! But the foeman's steel
Could not bring that proud soul under;
The harp he lov'd ne'er spoke again,
For he tore its chords asunder;
And said "No chains shall sully thee,
Thou soul of love and brav'ry!
Thy songs were made for the pure and free
They shall never sound in slavery!
Thomas Moore
Not Ready to Make Nice
Words & Music by Emily Robison, Martie Maguire, Natalie Maines, Dan Wilson
Forgive, sounds good
Forget, Im not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But Im still waiting
Im through with doubt
Theres nothing left for me to figure out
Ive paid a price
And Ill keep paying
Im not ready to make nice
Im not ready to back down
Im still mad as hell and
I dont have time to go round and round and round
Its too late to make it right
I probably wouldnt if I could
Cause Im mad as hell
Cant bring myself to do what it is you think I should
I know you said
Cant you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it
I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I dont mind sayin
Its a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That theyd write me a letter
Sayin that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over
Im not ready to make nice
Im not ready to back down
Im still mad as hell and
I dont have time to go round and round and round
Its too late to make it right
I probably wouldnt if I could
Cause Im mad as hell
Cant bring myself to do what it is you think I should
Im not ready to make nice
Im not ready to back down
Im still mad as hell and
I dont have time to go round and round and round
Its too late to make it right
I probably wouldnt if I could
Cause Im mad as hell
Cant bring myself to do what it is you think I should
Forgive, sounds good
Forget, Im not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But Im still waiting

Music is important to me. Music is life. you love it, you hate it, it makes you laugh, it make you cry. Sometimes music can even heal you or make you ill.
I never learned to play an instrument, well, because I have exactly zero hand eye coordination, but I sing. I'm vain enough to think I'm good at it. I used to dream about being a famous singer, but fell victim to horrendous stage fright. Now, that I have the confidence, alas, I have not the means, the time, or really even the ambition. So, I sing in the car, in the shower, to the TV, with my ipod. Who knows, maybe when my kids are grown, I'll hang out in the karaoke bars and people will say, who is that old lady? Do you think she used to be famous?
But back to the point, there are a few bands that have influenced me in many ways over the years, and here are a few of them:
Dolly Parton Some of my earliest memories are of watching her on the Porter Waggoner show. She was so shiny and colorful and sang pretty songs that I could sing with her. As an adult, I came to appreciate her song writing and versatility. She just amazes me, she really does.
Emmylou Harris has one of the most recognizable voices in the world. She can sing ANYTHING and make it sound good. It makes her special.
Duran Duran One of the first bands I ever really listened to that was not a country band, Duran Duran is still around, and honestly, I think better than ever. OK, so they are not quite as great looking, but musically, they still have what I loved then.
Night Ranger Got me in trouble in JR high and got me through high school. Always...Night Ranger rules!
Nirvana changed my life. I still cannot read Stephen king without Nirvana playing in the background, and I always tear up watching Unplugged in NY, recognizing, in hindsight, the pain on Kurt's face.
The rest of the ACTUAL Seattle sound Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Screaming Trees, Jane's Addiction...the music of my generation--all angst and grit and blood and sweat. To all those guys, I have to say, hey, thanks for making flannel shirts and logging boots cool so that I can actually say that I was in style once and thanks for helping me learn how to surrender to the music.
Old School Spokane Bands Some are still around, some have gone away, but I have fond memories of a time when Spokane HAD an actual music scene...Wicked Stitch, Washaway World, Malicious Mischief, Braided Theory, Chaos, many more I'm sure, but sorry, I had a little too much fun in the 90's to remember all those names.
Girls and Girl Bands like Stevie Nicks,The Go Gos, The GTOs, Spice Girls, Cyndi Lauper, Aretha Franklin, The Dixie Chicks, Sarah McLachlan, Sheryl Crow, Til tuesday, Janis Joplin, Heart, and so many more rock, they just rock.
Country Boys Like Randy Travis and Travis Tritt, Rascall Flatts and Trace Adkins, Tim Mcgraw, George Jones, Kenny Chesney and Brad Paisley have a place in my heart.
Bad Boys like Motorhead, Black Sabbath, Guns'n Roses, and even some of Shannon's crazy death metal have thier own place on my wild side.
Pretty Boys like Rob Thomas, Nickelback, Augustana, Counting Crows, and Goo Goo Dolls are like comfort food for my musical soul.
Freaks and Geeks like Violent Femmes, They might be Giants, REM, The Rembrandts, Bare Naked Ladies, and Everclear remind me that it's ok to be strange, by being strangely cool.
Really Cool Bands to check out...
Wicked Stitch
Washaway World
Braided Theory

"A woman is often measured by the things she cannot control. She is measured by the way her body curves or doesn't curve, by where she is flat or straight or round. She is measured by 36-24-36 and inches and ages and numbers, by all the outside things that don't ever add up to who she is on the inside. And so if a woman is to be measured, let her be measured by the things she can control, by who she is and who she is trying to become. Because everyone woman knows, measurements are only statistics. And statistics lie. "

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, however measured or far away."

So, still think you want to be my friend?
Here are some controversial thoughts to help you decide:
The war in Iraq is a waste of young lives. I fully support our troops, as they do their jobs and fight to keep us free, but I think our government needs to start supporting them too. By paying them what they are worth, and by bringing them home. Hey Mr President, take YOUR ass over there to protect your oil interests and stop risking our young men and women.
The Presidential Election is giving me a pain in my ass. I am supporting Hilary Clinton at least for now. If someone else comes along in an 11th hour bid and outshines her, we'll see. But to be perfectly honest, I probably will not even vote, unless it is to prevent the election of Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is the "antichrist" spoken of in many prophesies. I could go on for days as to why, but honestly, it should be obvious to you and if it's not, you are missing a few vital points and need to see for yourself. I challange you to find out and get back to me.
Britney Spears is a scared girl from Louisianna who is not ready to be a Mom yet. Leave her the hell alone. Just because she is rich--and you're not, just because she's pretty--and you're not, just because she is talented (yes, I said it, I warned you this would be controversial)--and you're not, does not give you a right to judge her or anyone else for that matter. Fuck. Give it a rest already.
Super models are disgusting. If you are 4'10" and weight 70lbs because you are a small framed person, great for you. If you are 5'10", being a size 2 makes you look sick. Eat some fucking mashed potatoes or something before you die from malnutrition. And put some clothes on. I'm tired of looking at your sternum and your pelvic bone. It's disgusting and wrong.
Abortion is a moral choice that a woman has a right to make for herself. Just because I support a woman's right to choose, does not mean I think it's right. It means that I don't think anyone who is in a deperate enough situation to need one should ever have to risk her life by going to some back alley butcher or be harrassed with pictures of dead babies from fanatical protesters. I think there are a million different factors that could influence a decision like that and that NO ONE should have a right to decide but the people ACTUALLY involved.
Education should be a right, but it doesn't seem to be anymore. Everyone should have access to reasonable tuition and training. And yes, home schooled children should still have to pass a test to be considered high school graduates. Everyone should have to adhere to the same standards. If someone wants to teach their kids all about whatever the hell it is they are rebelling against, great, but they better teach them to fucking read too, or they should be forced to send them to public school.
Health Care should be the same if you are a millionaire or a cleaning lady. No one's life is more valuable than someone else's. And being billed $600 to see a PA in an emergency room for 30 seconds after waiting 3 hours should be illegal.
Welfare should be for EVERYONE. I read somewhere that if the welfare budget of Washington state was pooled, all the pencil pushing bureaucrats were fired, and someone was hired to stand in a booth for a few days a month in every community and passout checks, that there is enough money to give $500 a month to every man, woman, and child in the state. Instead, we have a bunch of marketing majors working on how to keep the money from people who work hard and still can't afford to support their families, but make too much money to qualify or people who are actually disabled and cannot work and give it to people who are too fucking lazy or stupid to get jobs.
The Death Penalty should be used more often. I don't live in Texas, but I think they have the right idea by shortening the wait time for cases with 3 or more credible witnesses. I also think that there needs to be a more "eye for an eye" kind of punishment for child molesters.
