OMAR MUSA
Hip-hop. Poetry. Travel.
It is rare to meet a rapper who has swum with piranhas and alligators in Bolivia or taught Aboriginal children in outback Australia. Yet Omar Musa is not your traditional rapper. The Malaysian-Australian baritone has backpacked almost every continent and has a treasure trove of stories to tell. Raised in the orange flat bricks of Queanbeyan, the 23 year old believes he is going to “introduce a new level of poetry to Australian hip-hop.â€
Omar’s exhilarating crowd interaction and signature deep voice have led to extensive touring with DJ Rush promoting the internationally released Spader Mixtape. From Sydney to LA, Adelaide to the Gold Coast, Noosa to Tasmania, major venues have witnessed his dazzling live show.
He was recently featured in The Australian newspaper, Urban Hitz, Triple J radio and 3D World magazines and came runner up in the National Poetry Slam.Omar was a winner of the prestigious British Council’s Realise Your Dream award, and he will relocate to London in March 2008 to begin work on his debut album in the flourishing UK hip-hop scene with grime star Akala. He will then finish his album with veteran rock producer Geoff Stanfield in Seattle, USA.
