2002 was the year that Menis aka Road Runna began writing his first lyrics at the tender age of 16. Having witnessed first-hand the rise and demise of UK garage and the slow transition of the beats from 2-step to ominously darker grime flavours, he started to chronicle the trials and tribulations of his life as a young British Asian growing up in the cultural melting-pot of North-West London. He pushed himself to create deeper lyrics and the now signature innovative rhyme schemes that marked him out as a star of the future. Not satisfied simply kicking rhymes back and forth with other young MCs in street events and college breaktime battles he started to make moves to enter the scene professionally, and began to feature in raves across the London area, often having to earn his every second on the mic by keeping the notoriously fickle crowds entertained to the fullest. Menis, however, thrived in this pressure-cooker atmosphere and within a year had become a regular name on the bill of some of the biggest club nights and events in the country. A weekly residency at Empire Lounge in Leicester Square, London was complemented by appearances at massive one-off gigs like the Mega Mela held in Birmingham and the 2004 London Mela, where he held down the main stage with a mixture of talent and charisma belying his teenage years. By now he was flowing with ease not only over garage beats but hiphop/R'n'B, dancehall and other styles too, and had also become a well-recognised host. By 2005 the stage was set for his move from being an MC to a fully-fledged artist, and he began to collaborate with up-and-coming producers to hone his studio technique and songwriting skills. After that he hooked up with producer Nazza-T and came out with there debut track "Ssshh" which killed up the airwaves on all major stations such as Radio 1, BBC Asian Network, 1xtra, Kiss 100 and more. Now working alongside Nazza-T and with their double act having been signed to Xstreme Soundz, it's time for the world to experience a new breed of rapper. From the tongue-in-cheek storytelling of "Sshh!" to the cocky swaggering grime of "Don't Beg It", Menis has a flow for any beat. Songs like "Life" and "3 Words" reveal a deeper side to Road Runna's persona, where his candid delivery and honest, meaningful lyrics blow apart the stereotypes that have grown up around MCs coming out of the Asian scene. Maybe that's not surprising for an artist who counts rappers like Eminem, Ludacris, DMX and Nas as inspirations.
After the release of his album alongside Nazza-T he will be hard at work on his follow-up solo Album to be released in your shops Summer 2007 and it will be featuring some of best producers and rappers in the scene. This is only just the beginning for Menis....the best is always yet to come.
