The dictionary defines Nova as "a star a thousand times brighter than
others" and it's a fitting description of the incandescent talents of
one of music's most luminous newcomers. You can hear the glow in the
blending of Latin rhythms with a potent pop sensibility and a
compelling creative gift entirely her own. "Because we were right
in the middle, recounted the Costa Rican native, we had Bossa Nova
coming from Brazil, Afro-Cuban rhythms drifting over from the Caribbean
and of course, all the great rock, soul and hip-hop from America. It was a real
melting pot."
Debi Nova's sultry vocals have already been featured on the albums of mega platinum
selling Grammy Award winning artists Ricky Martin, Sergio Mendes, Sean
Paul, and the Black Eyed Peas as well as jazz greats Norman Brown and Boney James.
"I started taking piano lessons at four and by the time I was twelve I
knew I wanted to pursue a career in music" stated Debi. She
started fronting a Costa Rican band and had a loyal following
throughout the Central American nation. When she was sixteen, she
began working on writing her own songs. It was around the same time when she also picked up the guitar and bass as to have more tools for songwriting.
At l7, right after high-school, Debi relocated to LA to follow her musical dreams,
furthering her education at UCLA and performing at local clubs. While in school Debi managed to land a place in the legendary Brazilian artist Sergio Mendes’ band and traveled to Japan to perform with him. Debi continued working on developing her sound, collaborating with various writers and producers. It was in one of these sessions where she met Ricky Martin who after hearing her sing, asked her to join him on his world tour “Life†as well as appearing in his video of “Que mas Da†“The experience with Ricky was amazing, being on stage every night, traveling, and feeling the energy from the audience, inspired new ideas for songwriting" she explains.
Since the beginning of the year Debi’s been in the studio aiming to create a sound that blends all the influences and musical experiences she’s had.
Combining her passion for Bossa Nova, Hip Hop and lots in between, a sound that
Debi affectionately terms "Tropical Soulâ€
