Chicago Music United's goal is to bring together and unite Chicago talent, to share the labor, combine resources, and help build an organized, stronger, network in Chicago's Local music scene. Also to get a chance to experiment with new aspects of music with new people. United in force and sheer volume we will focus our collective efforts to draw industry and National attention to ALL CHICAGO MUSIC.
Chicago Music United Returns April 2007: After six months of hiatus I am glad to announce CMU is back. CMU never disbanded we just took a major break to focus on our original bans, recording, and shows in late 2006. To my suprise many local bands in general have disbanded, changed members, names, or styles nonetheless we are still working as a group. The CMU compilation CD should be released by mid summer with a Showcase to follow in late summer or early fall 2007. Up to this point John will have 3 songs, Lance 3 Songs, Patrick 2 songs, Dion 1 song, and KK 1 song. Tony, Nick, and Chris have been swamped busy with Inner Chains. Kelly and Jessica will not have any songs on the CD. Many thanks to all who have persevered and been patient waiting for CMU to return to complete what we all started. Keep checking back for updates, blogs, show dates and any other information on Chicago Music United 2007!!!!!!!!
Chicago Music United Update October 2006: The CMU CD Release Party/Showcase of Movements will not see the light of day until 2007. Due to circumstances beyond my control this is the way it has to be. Any musician or band wishing to be part of CMU contact any of the bands on our list, go to their shows when playing and meet them. If you want to play on the Project CD contact any of the team captain and ask them if you could write, record, or showcase with them live in 2007.
Chicago Music United The First Super Group Project 2006 This is John's proposal on CMU. This was discussed at the first two meetings.
What is Chicago Music United? This is a project visualized & suggested by 16 year musician of Chicago John Nardi to re-ignite the scene of music, help bands to network with so many other great bands and have fun. Look outside the box to try and create something new, fresh, original, and evolutional. Why am I here today? Because you love music and want to succeed in music. You all want to be part of something that will be fun, but more of a challenge. You dont have to be bored with youre band to be here, you can be content, but may want to just step outside of the normal and do something different. And thats okay to do.Why do Chicago Music United now? Because the time is right, the music scene in Chicago has been stale for many years, and in general. No bands have been signed, and if so they arent making the kind of money needed to be called professionals. Why should I spend time writing, and recording new songs with other musicians? Because there is so much talent assembled here, which is not being put to its full extent and use. Many bands here have struggled for years and years and are still at the brick wall with no change in sight. Why not try something different for once. What will I get or attain for my time spent doing this project? You should be having fun and enjoying music, when music becomes a job it isnt fun anymore. This I know. Also exposure through the internet for yourselves as musicians, youre band, youre talent, and right to be able to have the chance to perform with so many diverse and unique individuals which hasnt technically been done yet with results. How long will Chicago Music United take to complete? After the 10 team captains are selected, then they can start discussing musical directions with musicians here. This project could take 6 months to a year to finish. What happens if a team captain or members are not moving forward ? You must contact the other team leaders, and musicians to discuss options. If the team captain is not coming up with anything, or has no organization. The only alternative is he will be asked to step down as a team captain and will be replaced by someone from his or her group willing. If no one assumes the duties as captain, the entire project band may have to fold, unless suggestions are offered at that time, by the remaining 9 team captains who are working to get their material done.As a team captain how much material can I do? 1- 3 songs any style maximum. As a team member how much material must I do? That depends on the person and how busy they are with their own band and in their lives. They can record one track or part, or they can do multiple parts it just depends on them. How will recording be paid for? Yes but everything will be equal and fair. The writing process will happen by CD and tape trading or mini rehearsals where applicable. Bands must be willing to work around schedules of all people involved. This isnt 4, or 5 guys its a very large amount, so it will take time and patience. The recording can be done at home studios or any musicians with suggestions were open for them. However if all songs arent recorded in the same studio when totally finished the CD of 10 -30 songs should be mastered at one studioWhat happens if there are more than 10 team captains selected? Then we do it the old fashioned way we draw straws and that determines the captains. What do I do after Im done listening to everyone talk? Walk around, talk to everybody, meet youre fellow musicians, and some of the best talent in music in Chicago. This is youre chance to network, get exposure, try new music, play with new people, write and record brand new material, and be creative doing it.Is there anything I cannot do in this project? There are no limitations with this. How do other bands here my playing? How do I hear their bands or styles? Well you were all supposed to bring CDs of youre playing and material to pass around. I did send out probably almost 1000 emails concerning this project and thats how I got most of the information about everyone here today. If you dont have those then you need to contact the musicians through the master list you have received and go on my space, their website, or arrange to get a CD from any of the musicians. Will there be another meeting to see who will be writing and recording together? Yes the third Saturday of each month will act as meeting for us. After all 10 captains have been selected we will get together each month to discuss progress among the group. Hopefully we will be able to meet in the same place hence here. How soon can I start writing, or recording my songs? rk with, now you have find a way to write the music, do some demos, rehearse it, record it, and finish. What happens if someone in my group has a problem with me or someone else? No one here is in high school, so drama, mind games, personal issues, nonsense, arguments, and bullshit wont be tolerated. I know most of you as musicians and as friends, however there isnt a single person here or anywhere else that will stop this project from happening. So if there is a problem, you will be asked to leave and will not be able to participate in the project for those reasons. Hopefully this wont happen, but if it does my respect and friendship will not change with the musician. What happens if someone picks me to play or record their song but I dont want to play a certain style or with a certain person? We understand some of you have history and we don't want to wake sleeping dogs. We have a long questioner to help divide you by style similarities, and a section asking if there is someone you DO NOT want to be grouped with, fill out the section on the questioner, but if you can contribute to a project and have been singled out and requested to do so then please act like adults have some compromise, and remember this is for fun and education. Let's not have fights and end up hating each other. This project is to rebuild the 3rd most largest city in Americas music scene not tarnish it. If you really dont want to play a certain song, or with someone just dont do it, hopefully it wont take away your opportunity to a role playing in the showcase later on. <li Will I get to play live with these other musicians? Yes absolutely we are shooting for 1-3 showcases at The Metro, House of Blues, and Pearl Room. How will we get in? We are not a local band trying to get signed. With the volume amount of talent and the possible draw from so many bands they cannot deny us the chance to play at the top live music venues in Chicago. We will have the power of attendance by joining our collective draw, and that's all these venues care about getting more bodies through the doors. We are the music of Chicago whether we have been individually heard of or not by so many people, now we will. Why will get to play HOB or Metro? Because 99% of the local bands that used to play there any style of music the past 5 years are gone, its our turn now thats fair. When can I expect this showcase to happen? In six months to a year or when all captains are done, music is mastered, & project bands are rehearsed ready to play. Why was I picked to play on this project and not my friend from this band? Because most of you I know fairly well for some time. Some are here on short notice or referral from a close band to myself. You are here because I believe in youre abilities as musicians, friends, partners, team captains, members and you deserve the opportunity just as much as I do t be a part of this evolutional concept. Why arent more bigger named, better promoted local bands that Ive heard of part of this project? Because some who were asked boldly rejected the idea. There is no time for egos, whiners, and time wasters. Let the big bands do what they will do, they are busy enough trying to get signed. We dont need bad attitudes coming in trying to dictate or ruin this effort. What if new bands form with these new musicians, and old bands break up? We have no intentions of disrupting any current projects; however change in life is imminent nothing stays the same forever. There is no master plan to upset, disrupt or make any band fall to pieces. If things happen it will be each persons decision to make the change among themselves, we will do nothing to hurt any existing groups.
