The Mad Buggers are a group of Minneapolis musicians who perform Pink Floyd's epic album THE WALL. Our show began as the brainchild of Derek Johnson, formerly of Best Fight Story and current six-stringer, vocalist and songwriter for, among others, the High 48's bluegrass band. Seeking out like minds, he approached Tim Hall, also of Best Fight Story and Tangled Up In Bob and Greg Nesbit of Freeze Dried Fun to form a core group. With Greg and Tim providing bass and guitar, studies were undertaken to learn and arrange the ambitious vocals and music of THE WALL. Nearly two years later, the full band personnel had materialized and rehearsals for the first show were under way.
Our first and next several performances were hosted by the Terminal Bar, located in the Old Saint Anthony area. Audiences grew as the word spread about our impassioned and accurate stage performance. We have since torn down the wall at Jitters nightclub, Whiskey Junction, Star Central, the Varsity Theater and Lee's Liquor Lounge. One great date saw the band on a double bill, sharing the night with the Madison, WI band THE GOMERS performing another classic Floyd album, The Dark Side Of The Moon.
"Hmmm..." you say. "The Wall being played onstage by a bar band?" Well, most of the songs are played just like they sound on the album. Others have been arranged to suit our collective taste while preserving the spirit of the original recordings. A great example of this is the stirring number "Bring The Boys Back Home". We open the tune with a simple country flavor that is quietly intimate and crescendo into a full blown choral reading of the tune that brings the goosebumps right up. All the familiar sound cues add authenticity and continuity to the performance and frequent dramatic visuals keep things interesting onstage.
