Gecko, a four piece rock'n'roll band, deliver urgent, anthemic, soulful songs. They combine stateside influences with a mid-Atlantic, Mancunian-styled, deep, discursive, empowering and independent sound, filled with a certain swaggering grit and passion.
Taking cues from The Clash, Foo Fighters, Manic Street Preachers and Echo & the Bunnymen, Gecko veer between the tuneful classic slants of "The Second Coming" Roses' output and a more modern, infectious, adrenaline fuelled untapped energy.
A well honed and mildly riotous live reputation precedes them after years of gigging, with frontman Sam Bailey widely considered a natural stage presence. Sell out Academy 3 shows in Manchester alongside a growing industry push sees Gecko poised to take advantage with their upcoming 3rd release in Sept 2007.
Following the demo album "Viva Destroy" and indie hit "National Psyche", the "Flags Ep" marks an step up for the band. Surgent waves of guitars with epic shades of Radiohead and Doves thrown in; the title track expands on Gecko's trademark sound with an impassioned, imploring lyric set against a euphoric crowd pleasing soundtrack.
Amidst a "here today, gone tomorrow" band scene where style takes often precedence over substance, Gecko's authenticity, class, style and suss marks them out with a potential longevity, not too often displayed nowadays.

Sounds Like: "Already a Gecko live favourite, “Flags” is undoubtedly one of their best tracks. Buried within the bands sound is a deeply Mancunian style – the melodic consequences of a city steeped in New Order and the Factory legacy. But also burnt deep into Gecko’s style is their love for modern rock music, from the early Manics to the swirling guitar melodies of Oasis. This culminates in an ambitious rock sound matched only by the sheer youthfulness of this promising act. “Big Time Charlie” shines brightly with Roses styled riffs whilst “The Cardigan Boys” wheels out an acoustic guitar that sounds as though it’s being thrashed to within an inch of its life. Gecko are striking for their denial of current music trends – no choppy guitars for miles - a habit that’s very much to their credit"(manchestermusic.co.uk)"How nice to hear music that really makes us tick! We could sum up this review in just one word: Great. This EP really is great. For the first time in a long time, we put a new CD into the player and heard a song that instantly grabbed you, from the loud, vibrant opening bars, to the melodic, uplifting Mancunian guitars. Flags, the title track, is an instant classic. Sure to be a song to have music lovers dancing all over Manchester in the coming weeks and months, it is a devilishly-good tune that shows bags of potential in Gecko. It’s just one of those songs that gets better with every listen – and we should know, because we have already played it, quite literally, hundreds of times. When the piercing opening bars kick in, you worry that Flags is going to be some loud, deafening skater-boy track, but nothing could be further from the truth. The lonesome, mind-melting guitar opening soon gives way to a pounding, tribal drum beat, which in itself is soon joined by a teasing bassline. When fever pitch is reached, all of this is subsequently followed by all-band melodica to make even the hardest-nosed Manchester muzo wet his bed with delight. By the time the vocal kicks in, you know damn well that it had better be something special, and it really is. Clear, crisp and cutting, it is everything you could hope for in a vocal, and it really carries the song to the stratosphere. And thus, Flags continues – great lyrics, beautiful playing… we could not ask for anymore. There are two other tracks on the EP – Bigtime Charlie and The Cardigan Boys. Bigtime Charlie could not be more different to Flags, and it pays homage in many ways to the likes of The Clash and The Manics, whom Gecko cite highly in their list of influences. By contrast, The Cardigan Boys shows a more delicate side to the band, and the fact that they can write acoustically shows a priceless versatility that is becoming an increasing commodity in 2007. In all, it is a superb release from one of Manchester’s most exciting new bands. Check the band and their music out at: www.geckorocknroll.co.uk now! 9/10"(Matt Barnes @ Machesterismusic)
