About Me

"Imagine a fierier, less frilly Björk, PJ Harvey or Nico lancing every commercial impulse from her repertoire, and you’ll have only vague insight into this woman’s deep, emotional bouts with death-gospel drama, esoteric organ-and-harmonium requiems, percussive chants and unbridled, youthful whimsy. "
-Jordan Mamone, Dusted Magazine
Hello, hello. I am Vuk. I’m a Finnish-American, former one-woman band who recently expanded into a small orchestra of several people. Now, after two years of full-band lineups in Finland, I’m "alone" in New York again, and will be available for solo shows until I form a new live ensemble. Solo shows are mostly played with Delilah, my folding pump organ.
I draw from a wide range of influences, but I’d like to think that Vuk is more than a sum of its various sources. I’ve glided back and forth between deeper, murkier, experimentally musical tides, and the clearer waters of bluesily gurgling rivers. First and foremost, I seek to move and surprise my listeners. I detest the obvious.
The upcoming album explores inner, fictional landscapes, gardens, carnivals, funerals and sub-marine territory, fueled by dreams, musings, memories and spaghetti Westerns. The list on the left includes all the people I have had the pleasure of working with on my own music. The two main other bands I’ve toured and/or guested with are Dirty Projectors and Magyar Posse. Much thanks for the insight, growth and inspiration I gained through those collaborations!
The new album is scheduled for release within the next few months through Next Big Thing of Helsinki. (For the moment, the album will be available only in Scandinavia and Germany, but hopefully this will change very soon!) My debut album, "Exile!," was released through Verdura Records in Finland, in 2003. (Go to the Verdura website to order.)

The Dilemma of The Album as Doppelgänger

The lifespan of an album in relation to the artist who made it is a strange one. Once you present something you have made to the public, it becomes, in essence, who you are to the outer world. A kind ...
