Musicdish.com: “She lets us witness the poet that has taken the time to craft such pretty flowers.â€
What makes Atoosa’s sound so distinctive is her blend of lyrical influences stemming from both eastern and western poets, her dreamy and expressive vocals, and her approach to writing music with a creative and unassuming structure. Derek Sivers, President of CdBaby.com notes: â€She approaches her piano with a wonderful un-cliched blank slate. It brings out the sincerity, to let you know before she even starts singing that every word and note is intentional, and isn't just settling for the common chord.â€
Her music is a little bit folk, country, rock, sometimes uniquely Atoosa with haunting and dark piano lines. She’s a classically trained pianist and mostly self-taught guitarist. She was never interested in going to college for music, afraid that knowing too much “would take away the magic and make it a science.†So while skilled, she still maintains a beginner’s mind point of view when writing.
Her new album,When the Cardinals Come (release date TBA), is her third full-length and her strongest statement to date. “I wanted to create something that felt very authentic to me, and with this record I finally have it, what I’ve been working towards for years,†Atoosa notes. Produced by industry veteran, Noel Grey and recorded, mixed and mastered in just 9 days, it features a stellar band with some of New York’s finest musicians, including her longtime guitarist James Mastro, Rob Burger on piano and organ, Todd Sickafoose on bass, and Ben Perowsky on drums. This record is the follow up to the acclaimed “Night of the Deep Bloom,†produced by Brad Albetta (Martha Wainwright, Teddy Thompson) and Cameron Greider.
Atoosa has developed a dedicated fanbase in Manhattan where she resides. She’s performed at prominent New York City venues such as The Living Room, Makor, Rockwood Music Hall, and Sidewalk Café. Her success and critical acclaim led to a regional following that enabled her to tour nationally, playing such festivals as the NYC Anti-Folk, CMJ, Sono Arts in Connecticut, and the emerging artist stages of the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and the Great Waters Music Festival. Having won the attention of filmmakers, Atoosa’s music has been featured on soundtracks of three independent films, and awards and honors include the prestigious 2006 Insight Award for best original song placed in an independent film.
