About Me

a report from the trenches of art:
i've just come back from the front line. they are writing poems there, staying up all night, kissing like fools, and trading clothes. they are wearing down pencils to the nub and talking a mile a minute. they are celebrating the landing of humans on the asteroid Eros and making funny faces. there are shiny things everywhere and the flesh makes a mournful, sweet sound that travels along cables and veins and makes everybody goofy. it's tough there.

also, sometimes i speak in tongues. you can hear my band, The Glass Bead Game, here.

My Interests

"there is a need to dance the cosmic joy of shiva. yet we seem to have cut the possibility of doing it out of our lives and to have fed ourselves with ersatz pleasures. we sacrifice joy for pleasure, and try to entertain ourselves with very puny things indeed. things that are really very soul killing. the real breakthrough of joy only happens when we are moved to the core of our being- when we are shattered by our encounter with meaningfulness."

"...anything that makes you lose your confinement in your ego consiousness and makes you feel part of something greater than yourself- that's what ecstacy is."

"we could all become wonderful people- and what is more, we should. and we will."

- 'the call of the dervish' pir vilayat inayat kahn

i am interested in the dust that settles when worlds collide.
i'm interested in being shattered by my encounters with meaningfulness. becoming a wonderful person. feeling part of something greater than myself. ecstacy. mild piracy and some drunken plundering also acceptable.

I'd like to meet:

i'd like to meet people. i'd like to meet animals and minerals. i'd like to meet a wealthy arts patron willing to devote themselves financially to the development of my artistic vision so that i can spend more time wandering in the fields and sweating at the barre and screaming on the stage. but who wouldnt?

while there is a great chance that i'd like to meet you, please dont send me anonymous friend requests. send me a message first letting me know who you are and what we have in common. otherwise i'll just respond to your friend request with "do i know you?"

Music:

i write some. some of it's on this page. check out the glass bead game's myspace spot for more.

Movies:

Bird, by cera, Damage Control Dance Theater

Dallas Black Dance Theatre

i managed to find a video of dbdt. they performed this piece today. i cried during the show, and for about an hour after. i still feel pretty...unable to communicate in words. god i love them. ailey, dbdt, odc. that is the holy trinity of modern dance in the cera pantheon any time you'd like to take me, please email. i'll probably go with you.

Television:

no, thank you.

Books:

currently:

3/25/07
decolonizing methodologies - Linda Tuhiwai Smith

Heroes:

"See, my mother, she worked for the CIO [Congress of Industrial Organizations] as a labor organizer, and she made sure that we had appropriate heroes, flesh- and-blood people. She would clip columns out of The Cleveland Plain Dealer, a good labor paper in its day, [and] paste 'em in scrapbooks. We could take it to school to share with other kids at the equivalent of show-and-tell.
Scrapbooks were mainly filled with clippings about bank robbers. She seemed to favor bank robbers. Called them class heroes. Didn't understand at the time what she meant - I do now."
