He was imprisoned, tortured, and then killed while in custody in a South African jail on September 12th 1977. John Brown was a dedicated white man on a mission to abolish slavery. He gave his land to fugitive slaves, and raised a black youth as his own. He also participated in The Underground railroad, and in 1851 he helped establish The League of Gileadites. An organization that protected slaves from slave catchers. In 1855 he became the leader of the Antislavary Guerillas. In 1856 he followed his five sons to Kansas territory to fight for the slaves. In retribution for an attack, Brown went to a proslavery town, and brutally killed five settlers. He, and his five sons continued to fight in Kansas territory that year. On October 16, 1859 Brown led 21 men (5 black & 16 white) on a raid of the Federal Arsenal at Harpers ferry Virgina. He planned to supply the slaves with weapons. Within 36 hrs. of the attack most of his men were killed. Brown was wounded, and quickly captured. He was moved to Charlestown, Virginia where he was tried and convicted of treason. Before hearing his sentence he was allowed to address the court .............
..." I believe to have interfered as I have done,... in behalf of his depised poor was not wrong, but right. Now if it be deemed necessary that I should forfeit my life for the furtherance of justice, and mingle my blood further with the blood of my children and with the blood of millions in this slave country whose rights are disregarded by wicked, cruel, and unjust enactments I submit: So let it be done." He was then hanged December 2nd 1859.
