About Me

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: thewhirlingdervish.net
Band Members: Justin Smith - vocals, guitars
Xian Jones - bass guitars
William Brandon - drums

Influences: Billy Bragg, Fugazi, Jawbreaker, Nick Cave/Drake, The Red House Painters, The Clash, Jimmy Cliff, XTC, Early-Mid era REM, They Might Be Giants, Howard Zinn, Pavement, The Dead Milkmen, Pink Floyd, Pinback, David Bowie, My Bloody Valentine, Noam Chomsky, The Cure, Slowdive, Joy Division, Peter Gabriel era Genesis, The Buzzcocks, Drive Like Jehu, Sonic Youth, Hum, Built to Spill, Pixies, Radiohead, Stravinsky, Berlioz, Chopin, Mozart, Debussey, John Coltrane, The Chameleons, conservatives (they influece us to write songs about why we think they're wrong), Ned's Atomic Dustbin, At the Drive-In, Ride, Dinosaur Jr., Yes, King Crimson, the Stooges, Brian Eno, Cursive, Rudimentary Peni, Midnight Oil, the Fall, etc.......you don't have to sound similar to a band to be influenced by them. Influences can infiltrate your sound, your songwriting, your improvisational tendencies, your lyrics, your performance, your philosophical outlook. We believe your influences should not be pieced together like Legos to form an aural Frankenstein but thrown in a blender and left to ferment. Direction is for those who lack imagination or have an impatience or fear for the unknown.

Sounds Like: Indie Rock smoothed out on the noise pop tip with a post-punk appeal to it.
