About Me

What Is Power Metal?A primarily Teutonic offshoot of metal that surfaced in the '80s, power metal took the minor key melodies of late '70s British giants Judas Priest and Iron Maiden and infused them with the energy of the newly emerging thrash genre. Germany's Helloween, one of the first and most influential power metal outfits, expanded on the fast and aggressive sounds of fellow burghers Accept by adding sci-fi and fantasy lyrics and playing at tempos rivaling their American thrash counterparts Metallica. This hybrid briefly became tremendously popular, especially in Europe, with acts like Germany's Helloween and Blind Guardian offshoot Gamma Ray helping solidify its standing. With operatic, multitracked vocal stylings reminiscent of Queen and the mid-to-fast tempos of the thrashers, power metal gave metal an epic, classicist sheen that continued to influence new bands after the original scene died out in the '90s.
