'Shiikane', the name of music's new female group, consisting of twins Shay, Annamay and younger sister Baby K who hail from South East London and share Nigerian heritage. Ladies of many talents, they write, arrange and co-produce their own songs. This is central to their work, as their music is strongly influenced by R&B, soul, rock, indie and gospel music.2007 has been an amazing year for the sisters so far. They took the enormous step of moving to the other side of the atlantic to Atlanta GA at the beginning of the year to pursue their dream. "moving to Atlanta was a scary step for us but we always knew we had to do it, this is our dream and we are taking it very seriously" said Annamay.The girls we're persuaded to go to Atlanta because it is the home of so many of the artist they look up to and is renowned for its creativity and also is a breeding ground for new talent "as soon as we got here we rented an apartment and started doing live shows. Atlanta is dominated by hiphop music, so it was a bit challenging at first, but we soon got into the swing of things doing shows in clubs such as Club Crucial (owned by T.I) and the Royal Peacock" said KayOnce settled in Atlanta the girls started working on new material with various producers to help take their project to the next level. One producer the girls particularly enjoyed working with is Z1ro who has a hip hop sound fused with Metal and Euro Pop which is very unusual for Atlanta. "the challenge was to use elements of southern hiphop without loosing our UK flavour and i think we managed it, its a shame we had to come back because we had such a good time and the experience has helped us develop as artists" Said ShayAs soon as the girls got back to London, they auditioned for the show TV show X-Factor. It was something they said they never would do but the opportunity presented itself and they took the challenge. The girls made it through to the bootcamp stage after getting a yes and positive feedback from all 4 judges. "it was an unusual experience because you get to see what really happens behind the scences. There's alot of coaxing from the producers and editing, so all is not as it seems" said Shay. Inspite of their concerns the girls carried on to Bootcamp where their concerns we're further fueled by seeing producers telling contestants what to say and do infront of the camera and some contestants we're being hand picked by the judges and given special treatment such as singing and dance lessons. The girls voiced their concerns to the production team, needless to say they didnt make it through to the next stage. "it was dissapointing but at the same time we got a chance to see the show for what it really is.There we're so many talented people being sent home in favour of less talented people that we're willing to act like performing monkeys for the camera. If we had known that its a TV show and more about ratings than talent we never would have done it to begin with, its a shame because the public have no idea" said Shay. The girls say inspite of not making it to the live show they wouldnt have changed their experience because it has made them want to succeed even more.After their experience on the show the girls are optimistic and have been as busy as ever doing live gigs around the UK such as Club CC, The Peace Alliance Festival, Bar 12 and Club Tamurai to name a few. The girls were nominted for and Urban Music Award in the "Best National Unsigned Newcomer" catergory.
