Witches write sinister, twisted pop songs. They combine trumpet, glockenspiel, three guitars, analogue synth and anything else they can lay their hands on to create a sound that's as diverse as its influences, including Daniel Johnston , Tyrannosaurus Rex , The 13th Floor Elevators , Radiohead , Death Cab For Cutie and Neutral Milk Hotel .
With a six-piece line up, Witches sound like a cross between Sparklehorse , Low and Yo La Tengo . Renowned for their explosive live sound, the band have played some wonderful gigs in their home town of Oxford, supporting bands like Low vs Diamond , Barzin , Blackbud and Richard Walters .
Witches have just released their debut album Heart of Stone which has already gained some rave reviews. The album features performance and production contributions from Joanne Lee ( Ella Canavan ), Jo Edge ( Space Heroes of the People , The Evenings ), Ben Rimmer ( Jonquil ), Umair Chaudrey ( Xmas Lights ) and Jimmy Evil ( Suitable Case for Treatment , Eduard Sounding Block ). The album also features exclusive artwork by Emily Gray, formerly of Meanwhile, Back in Communist Russia , now of Ape Has Killed Ape .
Witches would particularly like to acknowledge the help and support they received from Martin Newton ( My Friend Rachel , Grant ) - we couldn't have done it without him.
