About Me

Founder member, bass player and producer in UK soul and funk bands Harambé and Broken Angel. Harambé released their debut album, 'Roots', through Universal in 2003, and the follow-up, 'Testify', in 2007. Broken Angel's eponymous album was released in 2005. All are available from iTunes, CDbaby.com and www.myspace.com/harambe.

As a session bass player, my touring and studio credits include work with Keziah Jones, David McAlmont, PJ Harvey, Keith Anderson (not the US country superstar - a different Keith Anderson!), Neil Conti, Luke Lockhart, Clayton Denwood, MC Solaar, Soweto Kinch, Moe Loughran and Krishna.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: harambeuk.com
Band Members: Karl Clews on bass and guitars, production duties and a bit of pretty much everything else. Don't ask me to sing, though.
Influences: The Neville Brothers, Allen Toussaint, Andrew Roachford, Angelique Kidjo, Armand Sabal-Lecco, Ashley Slater, The Average White Band, The Bar-Kays, Beverley Knight, Bill Evans, Bill Withers, The Brothers Johnson, Buckshot LeFonque, Curtis Mayfield, D'Angelo, Daniel Lanois, Dr John, Earth Wind & Fire, Ennio Morricone, Eric Serra, Erykah Badu, Lindsey Buckingham, Gil Scott-Heron, Herbie Hancock, The Headhunters, The Holmes Brothers, Incognito, Ivan Neville & Dumpstaphunk, Jaco Pastorius, James Brown, Jamiroquai, Joe Zawinul & Weather Report, Keziah Jones, Lenny Kravitz, Mark King & Level 42, Mark Knopfler, Lewis Taylor, Marcus Miller, Marvin Gaye, Maxwell, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, The Meters, Miles Davis, Peter Gabriel, Prince, Rahsaan Patterson, Robert Randolph, Sonny Landreth, Stanley Clarke, Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Tab Benoit, Todd Rundgren, Tommy Sims, Tower Of Power, Michel Urbaniak, Vinx
Sounds Like: I'm aiming for the earthy, 'loose-but-tight' funkiness of The Neville Brothers, crossed with the chordal sophistication of Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder, and the out-there weirdness of Lewis Taylor and Prince. Whether this is what actually materializes in live shows and recordings is not for me to say . . . :-)
