Stories. Movies. Books. Travel. Japan. In-line skating. Canada. Hockey (though not this year). Kids. Pubs. Darts. Friends. Family. Creativity. Passion. Politics. A bunch of stuff. For a bunch of different reasons.
I like a challenge. A puzzle. Not in a game-playing way. It's more about complexity of character. A person who is honest and well-intentioned, and who appreciates those traits in others. People who want to get to know others -- elitists who are not SNOBS. People who can be bitches at the right time and to the right people, but dump that baggage to the curb when the opportunity arises. People who love to TALK and especially people who know how to LISTEN. People who are open to letting go ... and understand the kind of magic that can happen when you let yourself drift with life's energy currents ...
I was tossed out of the pop-cultural loop eight years ago when I moved to Japan, and since getting back I've yet to really find myself getting back in it. But my favorite stuff recently: Outkast, Black-eyed Peas. Jay-Z. Sublime. Peaches ... and not so recently: Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, Nirvana. Prince and Stevie Wonder. U2. Tragically Hip. Sarah MacLachlan. Radiohead. BOB DYLAN! And of course, I've got a real love for the different sounds from around the world: Rumba, Kodo, Gamelan, and most everything of the world-music variety.
Where to start ... 2004: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Before Sunset, and Sideways ... as for older movies, I'll just bang out some of the best which come to mind ... 2001, Harold & Maude, Brain Candy, Last Temptation of Christ, the Graduate, Babe, Y tu mama tambien, Wages of Fear, Kurosawa's RAN, South Park, The Holy Grail, the Lynch trilogy of brilliant weirdness: Fire Walk With Me, Lost Highway, and Mulholland Drive ... the list goes on and on. Movies, I guess you could call my obsession.
I'm not exactly a T.V.-fiend, but I've got my two for the season: LOST! and Amazing Race. I catch The Daily Show whenever I can. Oh, and The Office. That's the funniest show since Seinfeld, I think.
Always reading something (best thing to do on the subway). BOB DYLAN! It's crazy that this guy can be such a lyricist, poet, and musician AND be able to write such great memoirs. I can't put down his Chronicles. A great read for all you New Yorkers.LOVES: Haruki Murakami, Milan Kundera, Salmon Rushdie, Kurt Vonnegut Jr., Khalil Gibran, Douglas Adams, Graham Greene, Alan Moore, Dave McKean, Neil Gaiman. Just read The DaVinci Code ... worst book I've ever read, I think. Just badly written. Awful. Boring. If you like it, do yourself a favor and keep it a secret from me. Don't get me started.
George Soros, Howard Zinn and Jon Stewart ... oh and that Yushenko dude for being poisoned all the way to the Presidency.
