I can't go on, I'll go on.

About Me

Chicago actor and director; Artistic Director of The Gift Theatre Company.I'm an official "medical mystery"; three years ago, on St. Patrick's Day, I all of a sudden felt like an entire football team was standing on my neck wearing high heels. I walked into the hospital and twenty minutes later was on life support. I was told I would probably never walk again, blah blah blah, and that I had had a "spinal stroke"--a phenomenon more rare than winning the lottery. I was told to work hard at the rehab facility I was being moved to and assured that It (whatever happened to me) would never happen again.I worked hard in rehab and within two weeks regained the use of all my limbs and was ready to start standing. Then It happened again.I lost all function except just enough muscles to breathe on my own (basically what it feels like breathing through a coffee stirrer).Millions of dollars in tests and treatments, The Mayo Clinic, The Board of Northwestern and all the kings horses and all the king's men could not figure out what happened. And it doesn't really matter.I am walking with the use of a walker, starting on a cane, and just began doing stairs this month. When not rehabbing, I need information: Harper's, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic magazines are staples as are Buddhist, Taoist, and Tai Chi texts to counteract the innumerable evenings at Polish and Irish bars of questionable repute. Love acting and am falling in love with it all over again, as I made my return to the stage in May at The Gift Theatre Company in Conor McPherson's "The Good Thief" which won a Jeff Award for Solo Performance.I love cooking, reading, writing, and also doing less fecund activities such as watching T.V. and killing people on PS2 games.I think I'm sightly addicted to The Founding Fathers.A man chasing the ghost of a shadow of what he was, grudgingly working towards the better person he needs to be.The best advertisement for mind over body/self-delusion you'll ever meet.A person with a dragon inside. My friends are all dangerous rogues and perverts and should be locked away somewhere far & remote.

My Interests

Cold beer (Chimay, Flying Dog, Dogfish Head, Heineken, Delirium Tremens, Sam Adams, Guinness, Miller Lite), great wines (Fiddlehead Fiddlestix, Iron Horse, Frog's Leap, La Serra Moscato d'asti, Ravenswood Zinfadel, Penfolds, Burgundies), conversations with my friends, politics, new writers, old music, old writers, new music, trying to find a storefront bar in Jefferson Park that isn't completely insane. Good theatre.

I'd like to meet:

God, A genie, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Samuel Adams, Bill Clinton, Gene Hackman, the casting director who thought Chris Rock'd be good in "Bad Company", Ralph Fiennes, the Russian guy who's been in space for like 7 years, Christopher Hitchens, Brett Favre, Greg Maddux, Nicole Kidman, Beetlejuice, someone with the balls to impeach the president for knowingly and willingly misleading the United States government & people into a war with Iraq, betraying, compromising, and ultimately ruining the identity a CIA deep-cover operative (Valerie Plame) as a vendetta against her husband (Joseph Wilson)'s article in the NY Times: "What I Didn't Find in Africa", as well as innumerable human rights and civil libertes violations and hijacking the worst day of our country's history (9/11) for his cabal's own imperialist, hegemonic designs.

Love that roast beef. I will watch "In the Line of Fire" all the way through no matter what time it's on and i have no idea why; there's something wrong with me. "Batman Begins" makes me go bonkers. Die Hard 1 - 3, Back to the Future 1 - 3, Spring Forward, Dogville, House of Flying Daggers, Big Lebowski--anything Coen, Hitchcock, Scott brothers. "Bad Company" is a guilty pleasure; Chris Rock is so amazingly bad in that movie, they should teach it in film school as how NOT to act/make a movie.

Television:

Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Criminal Minds, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Standoff, 24, House, Law and Order: Criminal Intent, Three's Company

Books:

David Foster Wallace, Phillip Roth, maybe Beckett, "Infinite Jest"; any Hemingway, any Joyce, any Colson Whitehead, and Steinbeck, any Oates; Jerzy Kosinski, "The Painted Bird"; any bio by Joseph J. Ellis; "1776" by McCullough; "Art and Physics" by Shlain. Isaacson's bio on Benjamin Franklin is exquisite. Patrick Kavanaugh poetry.

Heroes:

Jerzy Grotowski, Eric Forsythe, Tara Egan, David Foster Wallace, John Sierros, Zach Galifianakis, Dexter Bullard.
