Musicians
The Flute Trio is performed by Trio Xia, whose name is derived from the Chinese words for summer and Hawai..i. Trio Xia consists of Frederick Lau, flute, I-Bei Lin, cello and Thomas Yee, piano. The group formed in March 2002. All three musicians are established soloists and have international origins and connections. Trio Xia draws on its international roots, and musical expertise to present an innovative repertoire of contemporary Asian and Western music and provide opportunities for contemporary composers of new music. All three members of the trio are professors of music at the University of Hawai..i at Manoa.
Christian Saggese plays guitar on "The Saggese Suite for Solo Guitar" (2007). He was born in Verona, Italy in 1974. Christian plays classical guitar, electric guitar and mandolin in different musical styles. He has participated in several International guitar competitions and won First Prize at the "Andres SEGOVIA" International Guitar Competition in Almunecar (Spain) in 1999. The Spanish newspaper "EL PAIS" considers Christian "...among the best of European guitarists". He began his carrier in 1990 with concerts in Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, and South America both as a soloist and in chamber ensembles.
Matthew Gould, guitarist and Beth Schneider, violinist (Duo46) with Nathanael May on piano play on "Trio for Guitar and Violin with Piano" (2004). Since 1994, Duo46 has established itself as an important advocate of contemporary art music, actively commissioning, recording and performing new music for violin and guitar. Matt and Beth have conducted ensemble residencies at many Universities across North America and have given concerts around the world. Nathanael May is a pianist with a penchant for contemporary music, dedicated to establishing a new American repertoire for the 21st century.
Violist LJOVA Zhurbin, who performs on "Metamorphosis No. 2 for Solo Viola" (2001), was born in 1978 in Moscow, Russia, and moved to New York with his parents in 1990. He divides his time between performing as a violist in diverse groups ranging from string quartets to jazz combos and gypsy bands, studying and arranging world music for the likes of Yo-Yo Ma and the Kronos Quartet, and composing original music for film, TV, theatre and the concert stage.
Darel Stark, who plays on Frenetic Unfoldings for Solo Violin, started playing the violin at age six. Since his debut at age seven, he performed in over a dozen countries on three continents including performances at Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, the Kennedy Center, and Weill Recital Hall. He is presently associate principal violin of the Honolulu Symphony and concertmaster of the Bach Chamber Orchestra. At age nineteen he joined the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra as its youngest member. An active chamber musician, recitalist, and soloist with many orchestras, he has recorded for LCH Records, Concord Records, and CBS Masterworks.
Born in New York City, Mr. Stark studied violin with Nicole DiCecco, Lazar Gosman and Berl Senofsky. He is a graduate of the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. His many accolades include prizes at the Michelangelo Abbado International Competition in Italy and the Tibor Varga International Competition in Switzerland, a TIME Magazine College Achievement Award and two Friedberg Prizes in chamber music from Peabody.
Lisa Cella plays on “Let it Not be in Vainâ€. She is an assistant professor of music at the UMBC and a founding member of its faculty contemporary music ensemble, Ruckus. She received her Applied Bachelors in Music with a dual concentration in Psychology from Syracuse University under the tutelage of John Oberbrunner. She then received a Master of Music degree and a Graduate Performance Diploma from Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore, Maryland where she studied with Robert Willoughby. Ms. Cella received a DMA in contemporary flute performance at the University of California, San Diego while studying with John Fonville.
