Simon Wilson was born in Leeds on 15th December 1979 and grew up in Leeds & nearby village Church Fenton. He followed his passion for music through various bands as a guitarist before focussing his attention to the turntables and somehow aquiring the name DJ Lowlife.
In 2000, after a few years of DJing at parties and the occasional appearance at DUST in Leeds and York, DJ Lowlife launched his first regular Drum&Bass event in Leeds where he was resident DJ alongside The Scratch Technician, DJ C & DJ Sub - Darkside ran fortnightly at Bar Phono on Friday nights for a year and a half before retreating to the airwaves of LSR FM. During this time Lowlife also DJ’d as resident for Leeds event’s Sherbert & Casualty aswell as occasional guest appearances at Ragga Tip, various York events and Leeds Unity Day Festival (Where he ran the Darkside Drop soundsystem).
Next saw Lowlife move away from the name Darkside and join longtime friends Jungle FX to collaborate for a series of events aswell as a short residency for Soundystem. It was through Jungle FX that Lowlife launched his second regular drum&bass event with DJ C & the Scratch Technician at the Bassment in 2005. Champion Soundz was a platform for Lowlife to play alongside many big name artists and at the same time fine-tune his Ragga Jungle style. It was at Champion Soundz in November 2005 that Lowlife first collaborated with Jamaican born Reggae vocalists Bongo Chilli & Dan Man which went on to and continues to be a strong collaboration in the north UK. He also accaionally works with guest vocalists such as the Original Arsonist D.Bo.General & MC Jila and regularly plays alongside Leeds Dub/Jungle Soundsytem and crew High Pressure in a collaboration which also continues to flurish.
In 2007 Lowlife picked up the alias DJ Highlife but then after realising there was already a DJ Highlife, went back to Lowlife. Lowlife now continues to promote events under the Chamion Soundz banner aswell as part of the High Pressure crew and is a regular guest DJ at various events around the UK. He represents High Pressure Soundsystem, Champion Soundz & Bongo Chilli Records and is Bongo Chilli & Dan Man’s DJ. He also produces tracks either on his own or as collaborations with Myth (aka Papa Shango, aka Guano), Mistabishi, TST or Bongo Chilli & Dan Man... So watch this space for serious Dubplate action!!!
