Summer2007Creativity is perhaps the greatest joy in my life, and I love artistic expression in all of its incarnations. Art is one of the few human endeavors that confesses to its own subjectivity, and this is the reason why I love it so much. I am always happy to listen to people whose opinions differ from my own, but I rarely respect anyone who expects me to accept their own personal preferences as universal truth. Reality is relative, and it is diversity of perspectives that makes my life so interesting and so challenging. I am a walking contradiction, although I sometimes seem uncomplicated. I believe that it is important to look beneath the superficial; preconceptions are misleading, and stereotypes can be toxic. I straddle the boundary between pop culture and counter culture, and I am equally fascinated by the mass media and the bohemian nonconformist. In any event, I am an individualist, and I try not to care what other people think of me. I appreciate constructive criticism, but I always try to do what I believe is right, regardless of what other people may think. We are all influenced by our culture and our upbringing, but we have the capacity to honor our own conscience and speak out against injustice whenever we see it. I admire those with a positive outlook, who are able to remain optimistic even when circumstances are difficult. Yet I also respect those who acknowledge their own true emotions. Sadness is hardly a crime, but I have little patience for those who perseverate on their own sorrows. To borrow an old cliche, "When life gives you lemons, you must make lemonade." And you must simply hope that everything will work out in the end. I don't know whether I believe in free will or destiny, but I am a person who strives to achieve my dreams. I want to write novels, act on Broadway, and build theme parks. And I want to make the world better. There's so much I want to do. Now I just need to figure out how...
