Born Kendrick Allen DeWitt Scott on July 8, 1980 in Houston, Texas, he knew that he wanted to be a drummer from an early age. His initial inspiration and appreciation for music was acquired from growing up in a household of musicians. The first encounters Kendrick had with the drums were in church, where his mother and brother were musicians and his father was a sound technician.
At age six Kendrick's parents recognized his interest in the drums and bought him a drum pad and got him drum lessons. In two years his passion earned him his first drum set. During junior high school he cultivated his craft in church and at school where he was in the band. Later Kendrick went on to attend the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts where his talents were refined in the Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and in the Jazz Band.
He was influenced greatly by many drummers early on, including Eric Harland and Chris Dave from Houston, and jazz greats Tony Williams, Papa Jo Jones and Max Roach. His high school career culminated with many awards, the most notable being various student awards given by Downbeat Magazine and The Clifford Brown / Stan Getz award, given by the International Association of Jazz Educators and The National Foundation for the Advancement of the Arts.
Upon graduation in 1998, Kendrick was awarded a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA. At Berklee he majored in Music Education. His talents afforded him many opportunities, including touring nationally and internationally while still in school. After graduating Berklee in 2003, Kendrick joined The Crusaders and The Terence Blanchard Group. He has had the honor share the stage with Dianne Reeves, John Patitucci, Stefon Harris, Kenny Garrett, Pat Metheny, Nicholas Payton, Gary Burton, Mark Turner, Joe Lovano, Herbie Hancock, John Scofield, David Sanborn and Roy Hargrove and many more artists.
In 2005, Terence Blanchard's record Flow has received two Grammy Nominations, one for Best Inst. Jazz Album and another for Best Inst. Solo for Herbie Hancock's solo on Kendrick Scotts composition The Source. Also Kendrick has played on numerous films by Spike Lee and others including the upcoming release "Inside Man". Kendrick's band named Kendrick Scott Oracle is soon to release its first CD on April 10, 2007. Kendrick proudly sponsors Yamaha Drums, Sabian Cymbals, Danmar Percussion, Puresound Percussion and Vater Drumsticks, Protechtor Cases and Remo Drumheads. Residing in New York, he is developing his reputation as a performer, composer, teacher and student of music.
