Music (playing guitar, singing, listening, performing), writing (screenplays, fiction), Seibukan Jujutsu (hybrid style of Hakku-Ryu Jujutsu, Ninjutsu, Aikido, Kenpo and Iaido), Wing Chun Kung Fu, Escrima, mixed-martial arts, movies, culinary arts, travel, fishing, camping, hiking. I'm also into live sound reinforcement and audio recording, mostly on the side for fun. Long hours, hard work, crappy pay, but somehow it's still fun and you get to meet a lot of people. I've worked as sound crew or stage manager for a lot of old 80's rock, new wave and punk bands, a few pretty big modern and classic rock acts and bunches and bunches of bands who sucked so bad they're not worth recounting. I interned for 1 1/2 years at Studio 880 in Oakland, CA. and had the opportunity to work with platinum producers and major recording acts like Green Day during the "American Idiot" sessions (yes, that's me playing the wood blocks on Tre Cool's song about go cart racing to anyone who's ever heard it. My skill level is astonishing, I know and I am available for session work for a nominal fee! j/k!) Iggy Pop (believe it or not, that's one extremely intelligent dude and a legend to boot!), Robert Cray (holy crap, tha man can play the @&#;*$ out of a guitar!!!), Smashmouth and others. I would highly recommend an internship for anyone who's interested in the music business. Awesome experience, fun as hell lots of the time. I would love to still be doing it, but it requires such a huge time commitment and there's always that pesky money thing, or lack-thereof for interns. Lot's of good memories though! :o) Thanks John and 880 crew!
Way too many. This list could go on and on... Lots of people, living and dead, whom I admire for one reason or another or who I'd like to learn something from. I particularly admire people who are especially talented at something. Lots of folks I don't even know about who I'd like to meet!
Listening-wise, not much that I won't listen to or at least check out. Mostly alternative, and various types of rock. But I listen to pretty much everything, depending on my moods. Pretty much all genres and sub-genres of rock and R&B from the 50's to now, classical, jazz, blues, big band, world music, ethnic music, reggae, top 40, more... Sometimes all one after another. My music collection is enormous and reflects my schizoid tastes. :o) Musical influences get a bit complicated, so many to list, but I'll name a few of the big ones: Guitar: Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jerry Cantrell, Dimebag Darrell, John Petrucci, Brian Setzer, Alex Lifeson, Andres Segovia, Steve Sage, Stef Burns, Doug Doppler, Dave Matthews/Tim Reynolds, Kirk Hammett, Randy Rhoads, Tony Iommi, George Harrison, Chris DeGarmo, Michael Wilton, Ty Tabor, B.B. King, Albert King, Kenny Burrell, Muddy Waters, Big Bill Broonzy, Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, James Taylor, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, Walter Becker, and a shitload more who I can't think of right now... Vocal: Chris Cornell, Dave Grohl, Paul Rodgers, Bradley Nowell, Layne Staley, Scott Weiland, Van Morrison, Robert Plant, Peter Gabriel, Phil Anselmo, Steve Miller, Jim Morrison, Lennon/McCartney, Jeff Buckley, Geoff Tate, James Taylor, Elton John, Simon and Garfunkel and once again, a shitload more who I can't think of right now...
I'm a movie-nut, so this list could easily get out of hand: Goodfellas, The Big Lebowski, Heat, Good Will Hunting, Scent of a Woman, Lord of the Rings, True Romance, Casino, The Godfather and Godfather 2, Sleepers, A Few Good Men, Resevoir Dogs, Tombstone, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, Donnie Brasco, Forrest Gump, Office Space, Half Baked, Breakfast Club, No Country For Old Men, Into the Wild, Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, 21 Grams, Fight Club, American History X, Cool Hand Luke, The Departed, Shawshank Redemption, State of Grace, A Bronx Tale, most of the PIXAR movies, again, just way too many to list!
24, Lost, Simpsons, Pride FC, UFC, Ultimate Fighter series, Futurama, Family Guy, South Park, Looney Tunes (dude!), Arrested Development, The Shield, Malcolm in the Middle, Chappelle Show, the Daily Show, Colbert Report.
Cormac McCarthy, Stephen King, Raymond Feist, James Patterson, Clive Barker, J.R.R. Tolkien, Tom Clancy, Dean Koontz, Michael Crichton, Barry Eisler. I read constantly, sometimes I may have three or four books going at once, fiction or non-fiction. There's way too many to list here.
My mom, raising me and my older sister on her own, at the expense of her own freedom and with no help from my bio-dad/sperm donor.
My step father, Ed, for always believing in my potential, regardless of how much of a rebel and a fuck up I was as a teen.
Julio Toribio- Kancho, founder of Seibukan Jujutsu. An amazingly inspirational man and staggeringly talented martial artist. Everyone I've met in Seibukan from many different dojos has inspired me in some way.
And I'd also have to say that my Music Performance teacher, Steve Sage, has been a major influence on me. Through his guidance and not always so warm and fuzzy critiques; he molded me into a far better musician than I would have been otherwise, schooled me on how the industry works (I actually used to think I wanted to be a rock star, until I found out what the reality of it all really is. Thanks for fucking that fantasy all up, Steve!!). And more importantly, he helped give me the confidence in myself and my abilities which I had so sorely lacked! I can't imagine the person I'd have been without him as a mentor! Myself, as well as thousands of his former students owe him the world! LOL this is to much
