Influences: I like: David Brooks, Fareed Zakaria, Raymond Carver, wine, women, my hair long, good stories, playful language, Gabriel's Angels
That being said, its time for the third person take on Gabriel's influences:
Gabriel's influences are as seasonal as any good cook's; however, it always comes back to love for Jaco Pastorius (Birthday Concert, Live In New York series), Led Zeppelin, early King Crimson, Jethro Tull, the Meters, traditional music (of Appalachia, of Ghana, Mali, Zimbabwe, etc.), Glen Gould's solo piano Bach renditions, Tom Waits The Early Years, Fela Kuti, and Oumou Sangare amongst many others. There's love for the Chess Records sound, especially the mystery-rhythm groove of Willie Dixon and the ECM sound found with Keith Jarrett, Jan Garbarek.
In jazz, Gabriel favors that moody sound searching for the sublime; Coltrane's Ballads, or almost every Wayne Shorter album. Bill Frisell and Kurt Rosenwinkle are great and the Miles Davis album, Sorcerer is superb.
In lyrics, Gabriel is revisiting his love of observation, detail and emotion in Joni Mitchell's Blue and Natalie Merchant's Tiger Lily, as well as the surreal and strangulated visions throughout Radiohead and At the Drive In. He'll always think Suzanne by Leonard Cohen to be the tops in craft of lyrics.
In his lead playing, Gabriel favors the distinct phrasing of Albert King. For singing, he's recently been thinking about Chet Baker, Elliot Smith and the guy from My Morning Jacket. In attitude, Gabriel can't be far from the groove and edge in Fugazi's 13 Songs no matter the genre of the song.
Other artists that reside in Gabriel's psyche include: Shakti, Jimi, Stan Getz/ Charlie Bird's Jazz Samba, Agents of Good Roots, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Braid, Schlong's Punk Side Story, Beethoven, James Jamerson, Digable Planets, Weezer, Tribe (Low End Theory, especially), The Roots, Gladiators Dreadlocks, The Time is Now, and Rage Against the Machine had such a tight rhythm section, didn't they?
Sounds Like: a wrung out sponge, I think.
