Tylando Farris aka 40 Flame grew up on the eastside of Detroit, with aspirations of a basketball career. He performed in the sport at High School Varsity and Junior College levels with much gusto and ability that can be seen translated today in his skilfulness as an MC and even in what Flame himself now refers to as “4th quarter Composure”. However back then the dense atmosphere of his environment in Detroit Michigan lead Flame to gradually give away his basketball hopes, as he was tempted by the appeal of street life. Playing with drugs and stealing cars back in the days when the Hot Boys were doing their thing, had earned him the nickname Flame, yet the reality of the situation hit home when two of his close friends were arrested and sent to jail. This gave Tylando a chance to think about where he was at, especially when his incarcerated brethren wrote to him suggesting he move away from the ways of the street and concentrate on a career in rapping. Brought up on a steady diet of Big L, Busta Rhymes and Jay-Z this is something that had been in the back of Flame’s mind from the get go.40 Flame began writing hard and battling in the neighbourhood, utilising the same passion and determination he had harnessed back in the basketball days. He met his long term partner in lyrical crime Famous at a cypher, and from there the two started dropping mixtapes and battling, until their superior skills were recognised by the late Big Proof of D-12. Under Detroit icon Proof’s Yoda like guidance these two lyrical Jedi’s were brought to the group Purple Gang on Proof’s Iron Fist label. The buzz continued to rip through Detroit in tornado like proportions as the classic mixtape ‘HoodFellaz’ won the Detroit Mixtape of the Year in 2005. Flame’s notoriety as a sharp lyricist with acid like wit and immaculate rhyme structures was further recognised with shows supporting such artists as Young Buck, Trick-Trick, Obie Trice, and Slum Village, while also completing a 49 day tour opening slot for D-12.40 Flame and Famous parted ways with Iron Fist this year in a business move aimed at allowing for their personal growth and success as artists. Major Labels have been adamant in signing the pair, who have both decided to sit tight and continue to release hot mixtapes and add to the mounting buzz.
