The Divine Comedy

About Me

This page is about The Divine Comedy, a book which was written in Italy by Dante Alighieri at the begining of the 14th century. The Divine Comedy is about Dante himself narrating his own travels through the afterlife - Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso.
The Divine Comedy has been translated into more than 40 languages and more than 120 known English versions. The Divine Comedy was written in poetry and divided in 100 chapters (canti), 34 for Inferno, 33 for Purgatorio and 33 for Paradiso. Even though the original book was written as a poem, there are prose versions in as many languages as it was translated into.
Society Influence: Dante Alighieri re-wrote Italian History and invented the Italian language through his masterpiece The Divine Comedy. They say that there was an Italy before Dante and another one after him. In fact, Italy has gone though many changes in history, however, it has not since Dante Alighieri. Dante was a pioneer in politics and initiated the separation of Church and Government. This change is not only enjoyed in Italy but also in the United States and many countries worldwide. Up until Dante, poets wrote only in Latin, which was the language of the aristocrats and the schooled. Italy didn't even have a common language at that time, every town had their own dialect. Dante invented the Italian language through The Divine Comedy, which was not written in Latin but in a new language we call Italian. Dante used the Florentine dialect as a base, along with the best of all the dialects he knew, to invent a language to write his Divine book, not for the aristocrats and schooled, but for all who could just read.
Film: Dante's Inferno was the first Italian film production ever, produced in 1911 and released in 1912. Since then, Dante's Inferno frase has been over used for the sake of money, even The Divine Comedy made it to a rock band - what a disgrace! Now, Dante is coming back with a Vendetta. Dante's Inferno is being produced as Dante's movie and nobody else's. Dante will be back to the screen the way it should be done, his way!!!
