i love mixing all sorts of music & try to keep overhead low so I can work on exciting self-funded projects. i'm always interested in meeting people who are making creative recordings and seeing if mixing for them is a good fit. i usually do an initial mix on one song to see if we share a similar perspective.
mixing a record should be fun and easy. ideally a mixer should share your vision and the mix shouldn't require a total overhaul, which can easily take all the excitement out of a mix. when you are telling a mixer everything, its most likely not going to have a fresh, inspired feel to the mix, so seek out someone whose taste line up with yours, and will require only minor changes. when you make changes, you don't want to be puppeting a mixer, just refining the mix. "more subtler" as Buddy would say.
in my opinion, there is nothing worse than a flat, lifeless, labored mix because you've gone around in circles too many times. this is why i try to do a test mix just to see if the creative partnership clicks. if it doesn't work, move on... most important is to have a good time, it will show in your product.
MY CREDITS/DISCOGRAPHY
"Sound Bites Dog" feature/interview
"Intelligent Pop" online feature/interview i did on Inara George's "All Rise"
i engineered and mixed all of the songs for the upcoming Jake Kasdan/Judd Apatow movie "Walk Hard". this movie is a hilarious spoof on overly dramatic bio pics like "Ray" and "Walk the Line", brought to you by the people who created "Feaks & Geeks", "40 year old Virgin", "Knocked Up" and "Superbad".
In Walk Hard, John C. Reilly is a fictional rock star, a composite of every rock star that ever lived who indulges and goes through every stereotypical mistake rock stars always make. married young, drug problems, infidelity, exotic pets, writers block, temper problems, etc. we recorded the character's entire life catalog over the course of 4 months. John C. Reilly did all the singing and worked really hard at it. the soundtrack is fantastic: Rick Rubin is putting it out through Sony/BMG. the iTunes edition of the soundtrack will have a lot more songs than the physical hard copy can hold. we recorded about 35 songs and i think about 16 are in the movie. John really stepped it up and sang his butt off.
soundtrack out December 4th and the film is released nationwide on December 21st!
