With a voice that simultaneously cracks you across the knuckles and wraps you in velvet, Stacey De Looze is a breathtaking reminder of why we listen to music in the first place.Echoes of Kate Bush and Regina Spektor linger behind a voice of tremulous beauty. Add the passion and raw emotion of Jeff Buckley and the sarcastic sting of Tori Amos and you're halfway to understanding why she's bewitched everyone who's heard her play.Sitting in her bedroom looking more like a dark pixie than a singer, Manchester-born De Looze is ironic about her status as London's new queen of heartbreak. "I get pissed off because all my songs are melancholy," she protests, "but people feel it more. It's like giving an energy to people."On her self-titled debut EP the yelping chorus and seductive harmonies of songs like Queen Of Stone and the grave beauty of Lovely Bones soundtrack the most wistful parts of love and hate, with DeLooze's acidic Northern streak keeping it firmly away from girlish angst.
"I'm still trying to discover what I want to say with it but it's all quite dark. Because I'm so petite and innocent looking I'd like to express the side of me that people don't normally see, to make people say 'Blimey, where did that come from?'. Sometimes I can be quite angry," she adds, which looks entirely unconvincing given her vast grin.
Listen to the music though and between the soaring vocals and intricate melody runs a steely streak a mile long. "I've been really independent and done my own thing, working my arse off and earning my £3 an hour and I've never really been given anything," she explains, "And so I put myself above other people. It made me strong."
"I like the fantasy of being treated like royalty, but there's a darker side to it where it's not a nice place to be," she says. "It's a part of me, I have high standards and I sometimes expect too much of certain things, it's quite arrogant. At the same time I'm saying that if I put myself above people, if I fall there won't be anyone there for me.'When listening to a song takes you straight back to how you felt listening to music for the first time, it's time to sit up and take notice.
