Musically dextrous and solidly inventive... Empire Of Lights played a short set of songs that revealed some wondrous moments of surprise.
- Mark Paytress, The Guardian[S]upport from Empire Of Lights with their lovely... indie pop. Sugary and upbeat, comparisons can be drawn with Stars and the now-defunct Belfast band Torgas Valley Reds. It's all beautiful harmonies and warm synths, there is even a melodica! 'Inaction Man' is one of the best songs of the night.
- Louise McHenry, The FlyHooky but not derivative, creative without being obnoxious, melancholy but never disingenuous.
- Tom Robinson, BBC Introducing... :-)We really f*cking love EMPIRE OF LIGHTS. They remind us of Mew a bit but with keener subtler edges on the synths. VERY beautiful songs that give us a lump in our throats and we're sure they will do the same to you.
- Andrew Lewis, No FictionHighly literate and melodic songs with shades of The National, Beta Band and A House.
– John McCooke, The Good ShipI love Empire of Lights - its recipes are so imaginative and so thoughtfully cooked, using the valuable and varied talents at their disposal without ever getting "arty-farty"... Empire of Lights deserves great success.
- Barry Booth, emeritus musical director to the late Roy Orbison
