What up ya'll? I go by the name of DJ L AKA "The Master Key", AKA "The Universal Weapon", AKA "A Legend In The Making", AKA "Mr. 4.0 GPA" (Yes, that is right, i graduated from college in 3 yrs with a 4.0 GPA and a degree in Economics). Born and raised in Geneva, Swizterland, but of Indian origin (Yes, I am from India originally), I migrated to the U.S. during the summer of 1998 to pursue my basketball dream. After playing H.S. and college ball, i realized that due to the fact that I did not have certain God-given abilites that are necessary to make it to the next level, my dreams of going to the N.B.A. were most likely not going to happen. And I did not want to go back to Europe to play ball (that's why i left in the first place!). So i began to pursue my music dream, which was and still is to become a producer/beat-maker. However, i realized that the best step to do so was to first become a DJ. So here I am. A DJ. A hell of a DJ.(For more info, check out my bio below or go to my website-www.djlthemasterkey.com). Although I can pretty much play any type of music since I try to always be as versatile as possible, I do specialize in Hip-Hop, R & B, and Reggae (Shouts to all of my Carribean Cats!). I do mixtapes consistenly (I drop about 2 mixtapes every 10 days), so for all ya'll that enjoy music make sure to support me and cop my mixapes at your local bootlegger or on the different mixtape websites (ex:mixunit.com, mixtapekings.com, mixtapepro.com, tapekingz.com, mixtapeone.com, firstklassmixtapes.com...etc). By the way, in case you are wondering if I have any mixtapes that you will like, don't worry. I have best-of's, exclusive Hip-Hop tapes, R & B tapes, Old School tapes, Reggae tapes...etc. So I know that at least one of the types of tapes I put out will appeal to you. But on top of that you can listen to me on my radio show on 91.9FM, "The Open Lock Show", which airs every tuesday nights from 11pm to midnight. 2004 justo mixtape rookie of the year-
Born and raised in Geneva, Switzerland with parents who are natives of India, DJ L borne Lohrasp Kansara migrated to the US on an International Basketball Scholarship to one of New York’s most prestigious High Schools. Arriving to Spring Valley, NY, he then began to hone his DJ’ing skills when he wasn’t in the books or on the court.
Acknowledging music as his 2nd love to basketball, DJ L turned to music full time after college. “While attending SUNY Purchase College in Upstate New York, I used to DJ for the majority of my school’s parties on and off the college campus”, says DJ L who now runs his own business fulltime with partners, Ace, Nomad and Dread via Open Lock Entertainment.
Identifying consistency and exclusivity as the key to success in this game, DJ L has managed to put out an average of 52 mixtapes per year for the past two years. “Obtaining new music first is very important in this industry. It’s big to get someone’s song prior to an artist (s) album release.”says DJ L.
In 2003, his consistency paid off when he was crowned as the Justo Mixtape Rookie of the Year during his first year as a Mixtape DJ. Dropping two (2) mixtapes every 10-14 days, one of them has always been categorized as a “Best of CD” and the other as an exclusive “Hip Hop, R&B CD.” Along with Partner DJ Dread, the two drop a mix Reggae CD four times a year (one every three months)”. Artists such as Jim Jones, Memphis Bleek, The Lox, Wyclef, Busta Rhymes, Remy Martin, Prodigy, Kanye West, and more have hosted his mix tapes.
At the top of 2005, DJ L embarked upon an extremely successful promotional tour for his mixtapes. Fans and distributors in Greece and Japan rolled out the red carpet for his in-store appearances.
In March of 2005, DJ L and his mixtape partner DJ Suss One were nominated as “Best Mixtape Duo” for the Justo Mixtape Awards. With his mixtapes now distributed throughout New York City’s five boroughs, New Jersey, Connecticut, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, Canada, Chicago, London, Nigeria, and Switzerland it will come as no surprise that this young DJ will be a driving force in the ever-growing world of DJ’s for quite some time.
Taking to the radio airwaves, DJ L can be heard on New York’s 91.9FM every Tuesday for one hour from 11pm-midnight, L gives the NYC a taste of his exclusives featured on his weekly mixtapes. His growing popularity has additionally landed him a slot on Sirius Satellite Radio’s “Wax 42”, a new 24 hour mixtape show.
DJ L has been featured in magazines such as VIBE, Don Diva, BLOW, Street MOS, Tableist and more. And he is additionally also one of Violator Management’s All Star DJ’s.
In the near future, DL L hopes to be signed as an Artist to a major label and become more active in modeling and acting. He currently resides in the Bronx.
At the top of 2005, he and his Partners have launched The Open Lock Foundation to benefit the youth in their Bronx community and the Tsunami Victims.
