It started out in the third grade when I found a true appreciation for music and that music just happened to be hip hop. I would turn on 98.7 FM and listen to groups like Grandmaster Flash, Run DMC, Boogie Down Productions(KRS one) and Rakim who were some of the true hip hop pioneers. I was truly inspired by their innovation and pure genius. This is when I grabbed my mothers turn table and proceeded to scratch up records until I broke the record player. Ten years later, I bought my first set of Technique 1200 turntables and mixer as well as an ASR-X sampler and procession system. I began spinnin and practicing scratchin making mix tapes, spinning the likes of Company Flow, MF Doom, E- Rule, and Non-Phixion. I then met up with this cat who was spinning this new type of music that I've never heard before. It was different then anything I had ever heard because it was such rapid fast paced music but it had a lot of patterns that shared some hiphop similarities. It generated from break beats and hard basses and was at the time called Jungle but today referred to as Drum and Bass. I truly loved the sounds. One day back in 1995 I was listening to some of the pioneers he was spinning such as Andy C, Ed Rush and Optical, Lemon D and Dillinja. I decided to branch out a little more and buy a few drum and bass records to spin. Some of my first records were Dom and Roland, Ed Rush and Optical, Andy C, and DJ Hype as well as some others. I then started making drum and bass mix tapes.
Eventually I got serious about production and picked up my first MPC 2000XL and started cutting up samples as well as using a Roland Fantom S Synthesizer and Protools which started me on my hiphop production journey.
In 2003, I started Alien Hiphop Records, making demo tracks in my house with a number of different MCs I knew. After a few months I knew I wanted to build on my music and start a real deal professional record label. With the help of my friend Mike Guarino I launched Vigilant Productions in 2004 and it was officially incorporated. In the mean time I kept on making beats and posting them on my website for people to listen to and one day I got an email from this cat who just moved to Jersey from Maryland by the name of FLUENT . Now I was at first skeptical about working with someone I didnt know at all but when I talked to him over the phone he seemed very interested in the label and he was definitely a humble person. He seemed to be in this for the love of the music. The vibe was going well so I told him to meet me at this studio in Garfield NJ and that I had some beats which he could spit over. I was at the time very nervous cause I never heard him rhyme before but when the first beat dropped FLUENT literally murdered the track with pure justice! BIG UPS! That's all I could say and welcomed him aboard Vigilant Productions cause I truly felt like it was a gift from god that we discovered this cat. Not only is he just an MC but I can call him a very good friend of mine as well. We dropped Fluent's first album "Underground Famous" later that year. And currently we are in the process of mastering his second album which is an EP called, THE WILL TO POWER.
In the midst of all of this I met this cat named Curtis who goes by the name of Spindal. He was a producer of break beats and hard house and somehow we linked up and started making beats together. The first beat we made was a hiphop beat for Fluent's EP. I noticed that Spindal had a true love for drum and bass and this sparked my interest as I thought, damn, we both like drum and bass, we both produce, why dont we start producing some drum and bass tracks? A few months later thats what we did. He introduced me to these programs that were new to me such as Reason and Cubase as well as Recycle and Sound Forge. Skills were just getting better and better and knowledge was expanding. We decided to start an alliance called WARPED BEHAVIOR and in one year our drum and bass production skills have advanced so much. We then decided to start a DnB record label called Sol One Productions.
You can sometimes find us handing out free mix cds at drum and bass venues and clubs around NYC or your local rave. P.S. The journey has just begun and its only going to get better from here!!!
