My interest in drum n bass/jungle started back in 95-96, after i was given a few telepathy tapes, one of which was DJ Hype with Stevie Hyper D (RIP). I had heard drum n bass b4 but that tape really grabbed my attention, since hearing that tape ive been hooked on this form of music. As soon as 97-98 arrived, the overall sound had changed a lot, making way for the next step in the evolution of drum n bass. One day me and a few like-minded friends invested in a set of Numark belt-driven turntables and a bog standard mixer. We proceeded to dabble with DJ'ing and got into the music in a big way. I was changed forever when I heard the new neurofunk style being pioneered by two of my all time legends, Ed Rush & Optical. I cudn't get enough of those sharp and crunchy beats and the disgusting eardrum damaging B-lines. My taste in drum n bass was seriously altered after hearing this fresh new sound, and immediately went out and purchased the legendary Wormhole EP. (If you dont know the Wormhole EP, you dont know drum n bass!!)I carried on with the mixing thing till about 2000, then for reasons still unknown even to myself, I just stopped mixing and took a backseat, and returned to being a mere listener. After listening to the releases of the new millenium, I started to get interested in production, I had a big curiosity as to what the methods of building these mindblowing tracks were. So i started on the lowest rung of the ladder, i started experimenting on lame software like Music 2000 on the PS1, and also used other programs on PC such as the E-Jay series. I quickly grew bored of this as it was just a case of laying down pre-made loops and it jus didnt produce the kinda sounds i wanted to make.About a year later i was introduced to two programs which wud catch my attention, Reason 1.0 and Rebirth. I didn't have the slightest idea how to use them, so I decided to hibernate indoors with my laptop for a while and learn the ropes. I found Rebirth very easy to get into, and loved the techy sound it gave off, some people said it was a load of shit, but i thought it was an amazing piece of software at the time, though nowadays it is feeble compared to todays software. Reason however, was a totally different matter, the first time i used it, i did'nt have a clue what i was doing.....i was officially puzzledEven though i didnt have a clue, i had been told that it was an amazing tool wen used properly, so i gritted my teeth and learned by myself, rather slowly and painfully i must add haha. After a lot of trial and error and dogged determination, i finally had a basic knowledge of how to use it. But still, i was nowhere near where i felt i shud be, so i took it to the next level and learned how to write my own beats on step pattern drum machines (namely ReDrum). After learning to write my own beats that opened up some new doors for me and i cud stop relying on premade drum loops. I also learned how to use matrix sequencers for basslines, synths, pads etc, and did some serious learning about other things such as phasers, flangers, reverbs etc.Soon after i got my hands on reason 2.0, which had sum new synths and effects so i started the learning process agen to master 1.0's successor. I later moved on to 2.5, and at the end of last year got hold of reason 3.0, which is now the main tool of my trade.I then discovered other useful programs such as ReCycle 2.0 and Sony Soundforge 8.0, which are now vital tools for my work. This year i have been focusing heavily on my EQ'ing and mastering, as i knew my quality control wasnt very good. I'm still learning even now, and ive learned that u can never have enough knowledge or experience, its a constant learning curve. My work has come a long way the past 6 months or so, my tracks have become more intricate and the quality a lot more polished. I'm still going to keep learning, but i'm also looking to collab with a few people and hopefully get a few tracks signed to a label in the near future.
