Nikolas Barrell & The GinClub: The early influences couldn’t be more evident in this debut solo album.Reaching back to Muddy Waters, The Animals, The Stones, Velvet Underground via JJ Cale and The Who, Nik wears his influences delicately. An obvious love of song and music just pours out of this genuine and rootsy record.A unique voice and a delicious lean tend to accompany Nik in all of his songs. A subtle sense of drama and honesty just make listening to his music a real pleasure. In a way that is exactly what Gin Club represents. These first loves definitely pointed to a life in song, or singing songs, or being in dirty punk Iggy Pop type bands as a teen, or touring France as a live hip hop act in an army personal carrier.A Youth spent in music led to bands, experiences, brushes with labels like Island, Soul Jazz and Virgin in various solo guises and band disguises (Later as part of the BareSkinRugs, one of Brighton’s best kept secrets for years). For whatever reason, these proved to be artistic affairs rather than career moves great gigs, great noises, great fun. However - meeting one of Brighton’s finest producers in Tim Bidwell (the production heart of local scenesters Hardkandy, and co-founder of Folklaw Records) has opened the door for a great record to finally see the light of day.Teamed together with the Gin Club, comprising of vocalist and pianist Sharon Lewis (who has collaborated as a singer and songwriter with the likes of the Chemical Brothers and Orbital and was one half of the brilliant female duo Pooka), David Ronchetti (ex yoga teaching Buddhist Brighton band scene veteran, on Bass and Guitar) and Pat West (the guitarist from Mercury records Mushtaq, and Saez, a 4 year adventure in a French supergroup with 2 number 1 albums under his belt) old acquaintances, persuasive phone calls and random drunk conversations have paid off with a fine collection of great songs. From the languid reflection of ‘Ticket’ the velvet and addictive ‘Gradually Further Apart’ to the effortless cool breeze of ‘Pocket Full Of Stones’ - this debut solo album is a delight. The product of the right people in the right room at the right time - a genuine energy.
